We have an assignment for you. Check the schedule on Channel 97 and find out when the Candidates Forum will air. Last year we elected three residents to the Board of Directors. This year we must do the same thing—elect three residents to the Board. There are two openings on the Board, and there is a one-year opening to finish Director Frank DiNucci's term. That is a lot of new people on the Board in two years. This is one of the most important obligations we have as members of the HOA at Sun Lakes Country Club. Too many times we vote not knowing who we are really voting for. We have at our disposal one of the best sources of information about our candidates: The Candidates Forum. At the forum, the candidates will make a presentation of the reasons they are running for the Board of Directors. After the presentations, the candidates will be asked questions. The questions have come from you, the residents at Sun Lakes. All of the Delegates asked for questions from their residents. A committee of Delegates has reviewed the questions to make sure they are proper for all candidates to answer. The answers given to the questions usually clarify the candidates' thinking and will probably help you make up your mind as for whom you will cast your vote. It is paramount Board members appreciate the positions and opinions of other members and that they engage in productive discussion to reach conclusions and decisions. When Boards cannot negotiate with one another and find common ground, our entire complex is at risk. There is no worse situation than to have Board members at odds and not willing to reach an acceptable decision for all parties. Any member of the Board of Directors who has a personal agenda is doomed. The other members will be aware of it and will know immediately that member is not a team player. Throughout the years we have been very fortunate to have Board members who worked for one common end — for the benefit of our community. Sun Lakes is the size of many towns across the United States having some 6,000 residents living in 3,327 homes with assets totaling close to 40 million dollars. An annual budget of 10 million dollars demands "common sense" and "good judgment." Much thought and study must go into preparing the budget and making sure each dollar is spent wisely. The Board of Directors should remember that each dollar comes from the homeowners who expect our total complex to be looked after. Please view the Candidates Forum at least once or twice. This will give you some idea who has the background and common sense to be one of our leaders. Have some good reason for voting for a candidate rather than vote because a neighbor or a friend gave you a name. It is apparent some residents have never tuned into Channel 97. Try it and you may be surprised how interesting the programs are and how informative they can be on what is going on around you.
