By Gloria Brosky, Jodi Harris & Diane Schultz "All will concede that in order to have good neighbors, we must also be good neighbors. That applies in every field of human endeavor." ~ Harry S. Truman Homeowners Association: Usually established to make and enforce rules regarding the properties within its jurisdiction. Sounds fun… but break down the words and it is friendlier. Homeowner: A person who owns the home in which he or she lives (that's each of us). Association: A group of people organized for a joint purpose (that's all of us!). Once we look at ourselves as an association or a community, the minutiae and irritation of rules and enforcements can slip away as we remember that our associates are our neighbors and friends. The rules that are in place can help us to stay neighbors and friends. For example, I may see the beauty in painting my house pink and purple, but not everyone does. Do you see my point? If we remember our friends and neighbors as we make decisions about maintenance, repair, replacement or improvement, we will be good neighbors. Think of them as we improve our own property. We might paint our faded stucco, replace faded umbrellas, remove pots that are empty or contain dead plants, or remove oil stains on our driveway. These are a few of the things your neighbors look at daily. "A man is called selfish not for pursuing his own good, but for neglecting his neighbors." ~ Richard Whately 13.6 General Maintenance: Subject to approval by the ACC, every homeowner is required to maintain all exterior surfaces, including roofs, of their residence, and repaint and/or repair as necessary. Such maintenance includes but is not limited to the following: all exterior surfaces, roofs, all exterior lights, lighting fixtures, driveways, walkways, gates and fences, patio and patio covers, deck coverings, balconies, windows, screens, locks and doors. All repairs must be as needed. Many of you share a wooden fence with your neighbor that is in need of repair. Can you be a good neighbor and work together to repair or replace it if necessary? Home Inspections: Please note that we have restarted home inspections; we may be coming to your street soon! What we are looking at are the items listed under General Maintenance. Please take care of your general maintenance before we inspect your street. Quite often we meet homeowners who are happy we are doing such inspections. They are upset with a neighbor's home in need of some TLC, but they do not want to call and complain. They wait for us to attend to that street. Also, many homeowners are using old paint to touch-up their stucco. If your home has not been painted recently, the paint may not match your stucco. The entire house will need to be painted or you will have splotches of different colors. Door Colors: We are working to add some new door color choices! Seven new door color options were added about three years ago. It was such a hit that we are working to add more. Reminder to Pet Owners: 15.4.2 Mesh barriers are allowed on back, front, and side fences with ACC approval. Mesh barriers on front gates are allowed to add security for small pets and to keep pests out. The mesh may be plastic or metal and must be black or a color to match the existing fence or gate. The mesh cannot exceed five feet in height. By Carol Swanke This committee currently has two vacancies and we invite you to join us. We meet at 10:30 am on the fourth Friday of each month. The purpose of this committee is to recommend changes, additions and/or deletions to the Rules and Regulations when requested by the Board of Directors. We also may recommend changes, additions and/or deletions from time to time and present them to the Board for approval. If you are a Colony resident owner and this is a committee in which you have an interest, please obtain an Application to Serve on an Association Committee (available from Cindy at the Reception Desk, (951) 677-4341 or cindy.irving@associa. us). When completed, return it so it can be forwarded to the committee, after which you will be contacted. ARCHITECTURAL CONTROL RULES & REGULATIONS COMMITTEE NEWS 10 | THE COLONY NEWS | MARCH 2021 |
