Founders Duplicate Bridge
Friday Duplicate Bridge
By the time you read this issue we have been socially distanced for one entire year.
Reflecting on the last live bridge games in March of last year, we played Howell movements.
On March 4, the winners were Carolyn Curtin and Marc Beardsley. On March 10, the winners
were Fred McGarvey and Valerie Gwin.
Since then, all live play ceased but many of us resumed playing as foursomes or teams
online at BBO (www.bridgebase.com)
We had plenty of time to review bidding, play, and defensive strategies. In previous issues
of this newsletter we mentioned Larry Cohen's website and his A list of the four most useful
conventions: Negative Doubles, Blackwood, Stayman and Jacoby transfers. On his B list are
4th suit forcing, DONT, weak jumps, and 2NT response to a weak 2 opening. Today we add his
C list with the Unusual NoTrump, Michaels Cue bid, New Minor Checkback, Jacoby 2NT and
Support Doubles. Next month we will feature his D list with the last four conventions he finds
useful in competitive play. When you explore Larryco.com, click on LEARNING CENTER for
a series of bridge articles.
We offer a Duplicate Bridge game that combines the superior
scoring of Duplicate Bridge but also has the friendlier and non-
aggressive attitude of home style Rubber Bridge. With Duplicate
Bridge, your true opponents are the pairs that hold the same cards
as you would rather than your opponents at the table. We are not an
ACBL game and for that, we not only offer an extremely reasonable
game price of just $2, but also give cash awards to the winners.
If you are interested, please call John Gates at (760) 295-5885, the
president of this bridge club, to see if this type of game might meet
your expectations. We are relatively small and have anywhere from
five to eight tables. The games are at 1 pm on the second, fourth, and
fifth Fridays of the month in Mykonos. You do not have to join this
club to play your first game; however, if you decide to join, the annual
dues are $6.
