| OHCC LIVING | APRIL 2021 | 33 Cut-throat Billiards Rules Simplified for OHCC Living Written by Club VP Training, David Key Cut-throat is an excellent game for three people to play. The object is to eliminate your opponents before they eliminate you. No quarter given and ganging-up on someone doing too well is expected. Hence its combative name. Object of the Game There are no official rules for the game of cut-throat pool. Consequently there are many regional variations with subtle differences in the game rules. Here is the OHCC version. Cut-throat is a great game for three players. Each player is assigned a group of five balls: 1-5; 6-10; or 11-15. The simplest method to assign groups is in order of playing. Breaker takes 1-5, next player takes 6-10, and last player takes 11-15. Alternate assignment method is for the first player who legally sinks a ball (after the break) to select his group of choice. Second player to legally sink a ball chooses between the remaining two groups. Third player is stuck with the remaining group. This seemingly small change in group assignment necessitates a lot more concentration and makes the game significantly more challenging. Object of the game is to legally pocket all your opponents' balls before the opponents legally pocket all your balls. The player with a ball(s) still on the table, when all opponents' balls are legally pocketed, wins the game. The Rack Standard triangle rack with a ball from each group on a corner; all other balls placed at random. Rules of Play Players must decide prior to the game whether they are playing call shot or not. On all shots, player must cause the cue ball to contact an opponent's ball and then either: (a) pocket a numbered ball, or (b) cause any ball to contact a cushion. Failure to meet these requirements is a foul. A legally pocketed ball entitles shooter to continue shooting. When a player's last ball is legally pocketed, he is eliminated for the duration of the game unless reinstated. Penalty for Fouls Shooter's inning ends. In addition, one ball from each of the shooter's opponents that is off the table is brought back into play and placed in line behind the foot-spot. Players who had been eliminated can thereby be reinstated, and play in the same sequence as they started. If the cue ball scratches, it is a foul. The next player starts his turn from anywhere behind the head string and must aim at balls down the table. If all opponents' balls are behind the head string, the opponent's ball nearest the head string may, at the shooter's request, be spotted on the foot spot.
