| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | MAY 2021 | 31 Folkloric dance, Baile Folklorico, owes its inception to Amalia Hernandez Navarro, who pioneered Ballet Folklorico Mexico during the 1950s and later opened a school of Mexican dance. The dance routines, often accompanied by mariachi bands, vary widely throughout Mexico, central and South America, as well as the southwestern United States. Folkloric dance portrays the history of colonization and cross cultural art; it's a mix of primarily Spanish/European and Indigenous expression. The colorful costumes and vibrant energy of the dances are appreciated worldwide. The IDS coordinator of Ballet (Baile) Folklorico, Patricia Juarez, is enthusiastic and dedicated to her craft. Descending from the Vera Cruz area of northeastern Mexico, she is proud of her heritage and eager to share dances of Mexico, central and south America. "Folklore is language, culture, food, music, and dance. Come and join our group and have a lot of fun," Patricia said. The ICC Board has been working to have a great opening event when we are given the green light to resume our monthly dinners and dances. Bands are scheduled, meals have been planned and we are ready to see our ICC friends, dine, dance, and enjoy an evening out. Four ladies who serve as officers (pictured above) ensure a smooth operation from the monthly sign-ups to the conclusion of every event and include President Evelyn Hawkins, 1st Vice President Martie Steggell, 2nd Vice President Donna Leone, and Membership Chair Betty Beidelman. Not a member of ICC? Once we receive the green light to resume holding our monthly events, ICC has a program which allows any resident to attend an event (with a reservation) one time before they join. Try before you buy – how great is that? This is how it works – Come to the North Clubhouse on the first Thursday of the month before 3 pm with a check for $28 per person made out to ICC. You will select your meal and table for the monthly dinner and dance held on the second Thursday of the month. Keep your fingers crossed; we are confident it will happen soon! For more information about the International Culture Club, contact President, Evelyn Hawkins at (951) 845-7199 or Membership Chair Betty Beidelman at (951) 769-6200. Betty Beidelman, Martie Steggell, Donna Leone and Evelyn Hawkins work hard to ensure monthly ICC events run smoothly. They are ready to go once they receive the green light for events to resume.
