Hemet has a literary magazine? And it's published in Four Seasons? Straitjackets Magazine is the literary arm of the Diamond Valley Writer's Guild and has strong affiliations with several Four Seasons residents. The Guild was founded by Lynne Spreen; Jim Hitt was the original publisher, and Ellyn Wolfe is the magazine's current publisher and one of three editors. Ellyn got involved early in the Guild's development. At a planning meeting someone brought up the magazine that had lain fallow for years. "If we revive it, who will take it over?" Ellyn found her hand going up and became the editor. When Jim later stepped down as publisher, Ellyn introduced a new, professional format, and took on his role. "For three intense weeks, three times a year, my life was totally immersed in calling for submissions from the Guild members, reading and selecting the best pieces, working with the writers on strengthening their stories and poems, then formatting the magazine and publishing it. I loved every minute of it, but it became overwhelming after a few years. So I petitioned the Guild, found three editors to join the team, retired as managing editor, and continued as publisher and one of the editors. It's much more manageable now and a lot more fun. Our little team has a ball when we meet to read and edit. And we love the joint effort of everyone involved, especially the writers. "There is a lot of creative talent in and around Hemet, and Straitjackets Magazine is a testimony to that talent. We are always looking for new writers to join the Guild and submit their work. Take a look at the Guild's website where you can find our current and past issues and membership information. Or go directly to the magazine to enjoy the stories, poetry, contest winner, 10 favorite books, and a message from the editor."
