By Gloria Brosky, Jodi Harris & Diane Schultz We all love this time of year! Spring makes all plants blossom with new growth. Beautiful flowers pop up, new leaves appear, fruit buds pop and trees are getting a little taller. It makes a perfect time to visit your local nurseries to get new plants for the pots or flower beds in your back and side yards. This is also a wonderful time to refresh your umbrellas and patio furniture cushions. You will spend more time in your yard if it is clean and inviting. Enjoy the fruits of your labor (pun intended!). Gables, vent pipes and pop outs, "Oh My!" What are these three terms architecturally? Here is an explanation of the three and how they apply to your Colony home. Terracotta attic gable vents, or tubes, are common in Spanish style housing. They were used as a venting solution for the homes. The ones on some of our homes are decorative and made of either clay or a very dense Styrofoam. When you have your house painted, please have the painter or handyman repair them if they are chipped, or do it yourself. They can also be painted if they are faded or do not match your house color scheme. Vent pipes on the roof should be painted to match the roof color. Examples of these pipes are your water heater vent, HVAC, dryer vent, and stove vent. Painting them the color of the roof tile will help them blend. Also, any conduit on your home should match the area to which it is attached. An example would be that any conduit attached to or along your stucco walls should be the same color as the stucco. Conduit along the roof should match the roof color, and conduit along the trim should match the color of the trim. Your painter can take care of all of this for you. Pop outs? Plasterers refer to this as "stucco speed bumps." When painting your house, it is not always necessary to paint all of these pop outs. Some homes have a lot of "stucco speed bumps." Remember, less is best in some cases. We suggest you look at neighbors' homes in The Colony to get ideas of what you like. For example, some houses have pop outs only around the windows, while others have them at the trim, mid-high at the base of the house levels in addition to the windows. If your style home has an abundance of pop outs, the painter can help if you cannot decide what will look best. When turning in your application, remember to enclose a photo or photos of the area(s) where the work will be done and a photo of the entire front of your home. Applications are necessary if you are painting, doing a home improvement or veneer work. This keeps the request moving along. The photos answer many questions the ACC may have regarding your home and project, and "A picture tells a thousand words." The ACC is looking for a new committee member. We meet the first and third Tuesday of each month at 1:30 pm. ARCHITECTURAL CONTROL COMMITTEE NEWS 10 | THE COLONY NEWS | MAY 2021 |
