Village Vets
If you live in OHCC, you were involved in what military historians call the
"Cold War." The Cold War took place between the U.S. and Allies versus the
Soviet Union between 1945 and around 1990.
As a kid I can remember things like learning "duck and cover" at school, air
raid siren drills, and civil defense shelters. I was also involved as a teenager in
the Air Force Ground Observer Corps, which at observation posts looked for
Russian planes. We had to learn to identify all sorts of aircraft and report them.
Most of us who were in the military were involved in this War whether or not
we realized that fact. I worked with nuclear and special weapons, others were
B52 bomber pilots, and nuclear submarine commanders, all having specified
potential targets. But everyone, including civilians, was a participant, playing
a role in the Cold War.
When we all can travel freely again, some great places to visit in the west
as historical reminders are National Park Services, Nike Missile Site SF-88L
in northern California, the US Naval Undersea Museum outside Naval Base
Kitsap-Keyport in Washington State, and the Titan Missile Museum, 25 Miles
south of Tucson AZ.
Treasurer Bob Smith has set up a special box inside his front gate at 5059
Dassia Way for 2021 dues. As you may be aware, we continue to provide
support to our military friends even during these difficult times. Our dues are
$10 per person. Please include your phone number or email on your check so
we can contact you for any additional information, and mark it "2021 dues."
We intend on keeping members informed with our monthly Bugle
publication both online and via delivery.
