4 SOLERA DIAMOND VALLEY | MAY 2021 By Daniel Mendez, Chairperson I imagine some of you are raring to get out of the house and see more of the country, most likely by car. Before you go here are some safety tips for you. Of course, you know most of them, but I'll mention them anyway to be sure you haven't forgotten something since it's been awhile since any of us hit the road. Once you have a solid plan on where you are going and the dates you will be gone, be sure to share this information with a relative or a close friend. Let them know which freeways you will be traveling, and have a written itinerary of where you will be staying to share with them. Do not post where and when you will be going on social media. Stop your newspaper and mail delivery and ask a trusted neighbor to keep an eye on the front of your house for any papers or cards left on your driveway or front door. It is best to have some inside lights left on or even better, on a timer so it appears the home is occupied. If you will be gone awhile, you might want to consider shutting off the water. (We came home once to a flooded kitchen due to a small leak in the automatic water dispenser for the refrigerator. Thankfully, we were only away for one day.) So, where are you going? Did you check the weather to be sure you packed your clothes and car properly? Expect the unexpected. If you are traveling in remote places it is still possible you will lose cell service. It is not recommended to travel alone, but if you are, it is best to carry a whistle at all times. Do you have a spare tire and know how to change it? Do you have flares in your trunk and a handy device to cut your seatbelt or break your window if you are trapped inside your car? Keeping a copy of emergency phone numbers in your glove box is another tip. It's tempting for any unsavory person to rob you if your valuables and cash are in clear view unguarded. Always be aware of your surroundings. Your body sees and hears more things than you can ever process in your thoughts. Let's call it your "spidey senses" – the ability to sense danger. If you are tempted to pull over to a look-out point, be sure to follow the safety tips and don't go too close to cliffs or wildlife. And, please wait until you are back home to post any vacation photos. We all look forward to seeing your pictures and hearing your stories when you return home. By Melissa Valona May, more than any other month of the year, wants us to feel most alive. ~ Fennel Hudson Alive we will feel as the month of May has lots of things to celebrate. After many requests, the Recreation Advisory Committee and I have put the Annual Community Garage Sale on the calendar. So, get to spring cleaning and head down to city hall to pick up a permit. If you found your self doing spring cleaning the entire year of 2020, well come down The Lodge on May 1st and pick up a map of which homes are holding sales and give your home a refresh of something new. It would not be SDV without a Cinco De Mayo Celebration. Join us at the Clubhouse for a sweet treat and visit with your friends and neighbors. In honor of Mother's Day there will be a Kentucky Derby event held in the back patio. Come on down for an afternoon of races and prizes. Ladies do not forget to get dressed in your derby attire as there will be a lady's hat competition. We will be serving mock mint julips you are more than welcome to bring any additional beverages of your choosing. We are very excited to be holding out first Veterans and Friends Event of the year on Memorial Day. This is a free event, and we will be serving lunch and music. The Veterans and Friends will be doing their salute ceremony if from of the Mountain View Lodge before the festivities. I want to thank everyone for their willingness to assist in getting all the club/ group information accurate and up to date. It is so exciting to see more and more groups return to the Clubhouse. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. As of now, there is no projected date of when guests may return to the Clubhouse. The Board of Directors and I are being very diligent in ensuring we are as up to date in the COVID restrictions as possible and making any adjustments as soon as we are able.
