When A Wildfire Is Near
If you see smoke or a glow behind the hills, you can assume a
wildfire is nearby. Last year, the Cerritos fire came within 750 feet of
our northern border, the year before, the Horseshoe fire came almost
as close. We were spared by the lack of wind and the efforts of many
firefighters.
We may not be as lucky next time.
When you see evidence of a nearby wildfire, you can prepare by:
• Move your vehicle out of garage to driveway
• Close all doors and windows
• Move flammable patio furniture, propane tanks inside
Often when there is a danger from wildfire, SCE will have a PSPS, a
purposeful power outage.
You can visit READY.GOV to find the following information and
more on what you can do to help yourself in such a situation.
Extended power outages may impact the whole community and
the economy. A power outage is when the electrical power goes out
unexpectedly.
A power outage may:
• Disrupt communications, water and transportation.
• Close retail businesses, grocery stores, gas stations, ATMs, banks
and other services.
• Cause food spoilage and water contamination.
• Prevent use of medical devices.
Tips:
• Keep freezers and refrigerators closed.
• Use a generator, but ONLY outdoors and away from windows.
• Do not use a gas stove or oven to heat your home.
• Disconnect appliances and electronics to avoid damage from
electrical surges.
• Have alternate plans for refrigerating medicines or using power-
dependent medical devices.
• Check with local officials about heating and cooling locations
open near you.
Be prepared and have a plan.
And don't forget to go to the link fscert.org/pwrdependant/ for
residents to register their power/oxygen dependency and to find out
their Street Captain contact information.
Our Mission: The Community Emergency Response Team
(CERT) Program is designed to increase individual and community
preparedness and self-reliance in the event of man-made or natural
disasters. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has
officially recognized CERT as an important part of a community's
disaster preparedness readiness.
Four Seasons CERT continues to need your participation. Become
a Street Captain or CERT Auxiliary. Step up. Be a part of the best
CERT in the valley, come make a difference. For more information
