| THE COLONY NEWS | AUGUST 2021 | 35 CLUB NEWS I started painting in the 90s as a self-taught oil painter. My paintings were of the Old Masters style and Impressionistic. I have lived in The Colony for six years, and I joined Taka Ritchie's Watercolor Class five years ago. Thanks to Taka, I have excelled as an award-winning artist in Watercolor. My subjects consist of flowers, landscapes, birds, fish, insects, still life, abstract and portraits. Currently, I am taking watercolor classes at the Hemet Valley Art Association Gallery with award- winning artist and instructor Betty Pilley. I will be teaching our watercolor class with the help of Taka Ritchie as I continue to develop my teaching skills. Like many artists in The Colony, I belong to Murrieta Gem of the Valley Art Association, and I am currently a Board member of this fine group. This Association has made it possible for its members to hang their artwork in local businesses in Murrieta. One such business is The Chef 's Grille, where several of us had art hanging during the pandemic. I hope you enjoy my paintings in the Clubhouse Lobby as much as I enjoy sharing them with you. The Yarnsters, a knitting and crochet group, had their first get-together since March 2020 on Wednesday, June 23, in the Annex. We were a smaller group than usual as many of us, thinking the Clubhouse might still be closed, had other things scheduled. The photograph shows the output from about four members, so I am expecting to be inundated at future meetings when everyone returns. We make lap blankets for Hospice of the Valley and hats for chemo patients, newborn babies at Rancho Springs and Birth Choice, children at Oak Grove and homeless vets, and we help Rotary with the Baby Shower Boxes for Camp Pendleton. Please think about joining us any Wednesday morning from 10 am to 12 pm. Feel free to bring your own project or donate yarn to our causes. Our name comes from using yarn, but we also like to chat! Artist of the Month Yarnsters ATTENTION ALL SINGERS! The wait is over! At long last, our Colony Chorus will be returning to practice starting Thursday, Sept. 9. We will rehearse in the Auditorium on Thursday mornings from 9:15 to 11:15 am as we gear up for our winter concert in December. MEET & GREET! You are invited to meet members, musicians, and our fantastic leaders, Director Lorilee Bajema and Assistant Director Ron Gentile. Join us on Tuesday, Sept. 7, at 6:15 pm during Karaoke. This is a casual evening where we will be able to chat, hear some singing, ask questions, and get a general feel for how much fun it is to belong to our spirited group. There's always room for more! Don't worry. You won't need to sing at Karaoke, and there is no audition for the Chorus, or a need to read music. The only requirements are being able to carry a tune, have a love of singing, and be ready to share it with family, friends and neighbors. Come out and join us for a lively musical evening at Karaoke and plan on attending our Chorus practice on Sept. 9. Contact our president, Bonnie Graham, at 619-889-6770 for more information. Chorus Genteel Voices is an 18-member musical ensemble comprised of 16 singers, a pianist and a percussionist. We are probably best known for our Music and the Movies programs. We are currently rehearsing our 21st of these, which will feature Steven Spielberg/John Williams collaborations on ER, Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, Schindler's List, Close Encounters, and Home Alone. Our next performance will take place in the Auditorium on Sunday, Aug. 22, at 7 pm. Tickets are $5 per person or two for $8 and can be purchased from Cindy, the Receptionist, or by calling me. You may pick up a flyer next to Kara's office or give me a call for more information.
