Thurs., June 24, was a hectic day in the Billiards room as 14
members competed in a 9-Ball Tournament utilizing a modified
round robin format. A B-skill player competing against a more
advanced A-skill player was given a handicap which allowed the B
player to win by sinking either the 8 or 9 ball. It was a non-call game
except for the winning last shot. This rule was applied when players
sunk the 9-Ball without calling the pocket. In these cases, the game
continues with the 9-ball spotted.
Some games lasted about a minute while others lasted half an
hour. We planned to play four rounds with each player competing
against four different players. Oddly, several of the perennial winners
had only two wins after the first four rounds due to the success of the
handicapped B players.
There was plenty of time for a fifth round, but the results did not
provide any clear winner except B-player Ken Schreiner and A-player
Russ Kubart, with four wins each. Six players had three wins.
We decided the sixth round would be an elimination round with
the winners qualifying for the final cash prizes. Ken eliminated Russ,
Bob Sandler eliminated John Mitchell, Stan Katz eliminated Fred
Ganoe, and Denny Kent eliminated Gary Pelcher. The four winning
players were now playing for the cash.
In the semifinals Bob beat Denny, and Stan beat Ken. In the final
playoffs Stan took first winning $50 while Bob got second and $25.
In the other final Ken got third and $10 with Denny getting $5 for
fourth.
Many of the players were happily surprised at how many rounds
they were able to play. Nearly everyone was able to meet a stranger –
and make a friend!
