For those with little or no experience, we are now offering a beginner's tap and jazz class on Thursdays at 3:30 pm. Come and try out one of the best classes, which combines great exercise and a lot of fun. We have classes in jazz, tap, Hawaiian, and belly dancing. If you are interested in tap or jazz, please contact Allison Stewart at als2art@gmail.com. If you are interested in Hawaiian dancing, please contact Valerie Thompson at valgene2@ cox.net. If you are interested in belly dancing, please contact Sharon Lair at (760) 822-2670. Now that we are back to class with our teachers, we are starting to perfect our dances (and for some of our newer dancers to learn the performance pieces) for our next Ocean Hills performance, which was postponed in 2020, and we are working with staff to get it rescheduled in the first half of 2022. We recently lost our beautiful Hawaiian dance teacher, Marilee Garcia. Marilee taught here for over 20 years until she retired a few years ago, putting on numerous shows in Abravanel Hall, and on the Lanai, with 20 to 25 dancers including a group of men who performed in all the shows. She taught us many Polynesian dances, including Hawaiian, Tahitian, Philippine, and Maori. Marilee had been a professional dancer in a troupe that performed with many of the great Hawaiian music groups and served at times as opening acts for Bob Hope and others. She had an amazing career as a highly acclaimed and beautiful dancer. She was a much-loved teacher here, a woman of great grace and inner and outer beauty. 14 | OHCC LIVING | AUGUST 2021 | Ocean Hills Dance Troupe Marilee Garcia Village Squares An Invitation: We invite all experienced dancers and all who are new to square dancing to join us in an exciting reinvention of our club and our lessons. We have engaged an energetic new caller, Mike Haworth, and we are adopting the Social Square Dance system. He will be teaching 50 calls in a course that lasts only 14 weeks! After that time, you will be square dancing! The 50 calls will still prove challenging enough for experienced dancers but accessible for beginners. Our square dance club is a place of friendliness, camaraderie, and fun. We are anxious to share this experience with all who would like to try it. Our first lesson is Thurs., Aug. 12. Come try this out. See how much fun this can be! The first lesson is free, and subsequent lessons are only $5. Refreshments will be provided. We are asking all returning dancers to take the class also, so we can all start on this together. Returning dancers will be able to help newcomers. Dress is casual. We are asking that dancers be vaccinated. If you want to experience one of the happiest places in Ocean Hills, come join us Aug. 12 at 6:30 pm. See you in a square!
