26 | OHCC LIVING | AUGUST 2021 | Art Lovers It was a beautiful day in Oceanside when members of the Art Lovers Club gathered at Oceanside Museum of Art to view several of their exhibits. Our Vice-President, Paula Doss, who is also a docent at OMA, showed us how we can learn more about each artist by scanning the QR code beside the artist's name with our cell phones. It was fascinating. We were greeted by OMA Executive Director, Maria Mingalone who told us how happy she and the staff are to see visitors back again at the museum. Twenty Women NOW is a compelling exhibition of artwork by a San Diego-based artist collective that embodies a diverse cross-section of Southern California. It is a reflection of the challenge's women face today. The pandemic motivated the artists to ponder racial injustice, the effects of climate change and political polarization. Depicted above are Julia Gray's ceramic pieces, SHE, The Power of Protest. Other exhibits include Amanda Kachadorian's oil paintings of hybrid plants of our area which are almost surrealist in nature. Kevin Vincent's work, Material Memory, includes works of wood and rope. Two weeks before, we enjoyed a Zoom visit with sculptor, Eileen Sprague. She showed us many of her beautiful sculptures including Ying and Yang (right) in alabaster. Eileen talked about the various materials she uses and their qualities, e.g., marble and granite being the hardest while soapstone is the softest. Alabaster and soapstone can crack while working on them often giving her new ideas for design. Ms. Sprague showed us an array of the sculpting tools she uses including several chisels, hammers, rasps, electric sanders and polishers, and wet and dry sandpaper. To view more of Eileen's work please visit https://art- by-eileen.net. If you wish to become a member of the Art Lovers Club dues are $5 until the end of 2021. On Do Dues Day in January 2022, dues will be $10 for the entire year. Please leave your check made out to OHCC Art Lovers Club and place in Treasurer Hal Stephen's tube at 4137 Arcadia or bring to the Clubhouse front desk. Please include your phone number and email address so that we may contact you. For more information visit our website, http:// ohccartlovers.wixsite.com/art-lovers. Art Room Welcome back! Judy Harris and Lainy Vinikow are so very pleased to welcome you back as we return to a sense of "normalcy" of life here in Ocean Hills and can now enjoy activities at the Clubhouse! We can enjoy each other's company without a face covering… all the better to share smiles and clearly hear the exchange of greetings. And to enjoy the newest display of photography talent in the Art Studio. As you enter the Art Studio, be sure to check the photography featured on the wall just to the right of the entry doors; taken at Leo Carrillo Ranch in Carlsbad by Paul Elsberry. Featured in the Art Studio are lovely photos of flowers, powerful photos of seascapes, interesting faces from foreign lands, a jumper in mid-air, and a striking photo of the words "Open-Closed" which seems to summarize the last year we've all experienced as we emerge from the darkness to the light! Come and enjoy! On display are photographs by: • Joe Ashby • Christy Cooper • Joan Comito • Paul Elsberry • Sherrie McDaniel • Jim McDonough • Ernie Pick • Kathy Thornton • Mike Thornton
