EXCURSIONS Sign-ups begin for the Recreation Department excursions on July 1, at 8 am, in the Rec. Dept. offices. PLEASE NOTE! Due to some of the excursion refund policies, and to keep cancellations down to a minimum, we ask those who wish to sign up for an excursion to please check your calendar for prior engagements prior to signing up for excursions. REFUND POLICY: 1. Cancellations made 30 days prior to the departure date of an excursion or special event will qualify for a full refund. 2. Cancellations made after the 30 day refund deadline are not refundable. However, if an excursion or event has sold out and there is a wait list, the Recreation Department may issue a refund if the ticket can be resold from the wait list. Thank you Long Beach Lobster Festival Sat., Sept., 7, 10 am - 5 pm, $45 pp. September may summon the turning of the maple leaves in other parts of the country, but in L.A. it means another red-hued sight… LOBSTER! It's the original Lobster Festival in Long Beach at Rainbow Lagoon! Join this tradition where tons of fresh Maine Lobster is flown in nightly from the icy Atlantic Ocean, prepared and cooked to mouthwatering perfection, by a Master Chef in the World's Largest Steamers. There will also be incredible live music from local artists with two stages for dancing, activities, arts and crafts booths, giant food court, and beach bars to create the largest Lobster Festival outside of Maine, right here in Southern California! *Limited tickets for this excursion. Santa Monica & Farmer's Market Wed., Sept. 25, 8 am – 3:30 pm, $19 pp. Escape the desert for the day and shop in Santa Monica's downtown and Farmer's Market. There is nothing quite like wandering the colorful aisles of the Santa Monica Farmer's Market. The textures, smells, and visuals! The Wednesday Farmer's Market is the largest and frequently visited by local star chefs. Local restaurants make weekly appearances in a food tent. The market is known for its rich bounties of vegetables, baskets of freshly cut flowers, live music, breads, cheeses, and delicious food samples. There are also quaint little shops around the area that have unique "one of a kind" items that make shopping a delightful experience. Grab your friends and mark your calendar, you're going to spend the day in Santa Monica! "Beyond Gravity" San Bernardino Symphony Sat., Sept. 28, 4 – 10 pm, $38 pp. Get ready for a night of great food and exciting music at the San Bernardino Symphony. We will begin the evening with dinner on the Veranda at Sun Lakes and then the bus will depart promptly at 6:30 to go to the theater. At the theater, the featured composers are Gustav Theodore Holst and John Williams. Holst was an English composer, arranger, and teacher. He is best known for his orchestral suite "The Planets." Holst began composing "The Planets" in 1914. Mars was the first to be written, followed by Venus and Jupiter. Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune were all composed during 1915 and Mercury was completed in 1916. John Williams is an American composer, conductor and pianist. He is considered to be one of the greatest most influential and successful film composers of all time. He has composed some of the recognizable film scores in cinematic history, including the Star Wars saga, Superman, Jaws, Indiana Jones, E.T., Jurassic Park, and War Horse. Join us for this galactic premiere that will lift your spirits into the comos! Dinner will be a choice of chicken piccata with roasted reds or Mandarin tilapia with rice. If a holiday falls on the first day of the month, sign-ups will begin the next day. waiting list policy The waiting list is created by the Rec. Dept. for sold out events/ excursions. This list is used (in order of registration) when the attendee has to cancel due to illness, doctor's appointment, etc. The waiting list is not used for additional sign-ups for secondary excursions that are scheduled due to their popularity. Contact the Rec. Dept. if you have any questions about either of these two policies. We accept checks only (payable to Sun Lakes). All Recreation Classes, Excursions, and Special Events are open to residents only, unless otherwise specified. We may open Excursions and Special Events to guests if numbers are low and the activity is in danger of being canceled. -Thank you!
