I don't know about you, but I can't seem to get enough of September quotes that shout, "Hello, September! Welcome! We've been waiting for you!" Perhaps that is why my favorite song is from the longest running Broadway musical, The Fantasticks. "Try to Remember" Try to remember the kind of September When life was slow and oh so mellow. Try to remember and if you remember Then Follow. September heralds the beginning of fall. It is the time of the year's harvest when we look back to see the fruits of our labors and to celebrate. We also celebrate the fullest moon of the year, "The Harvest Moon." September is also important to our history. On Sept. 17, 1787, our Constitution was adopted, and shortly thereafter came the First Amendment, that included freedom of speech and of the press. Those freedoms were further reinforced in 1982 when the American Association of Librarians designated the last week of September as "Banned Books Week." It directed our attention to the danger that exists when restraints are imposed on information in a free society. Because of these freedoms, individuals are encouraged to write books that are certain to be made available to all. Sue B Detisch, a resident who writes under the pseudonym Blake S. Lee, has donated her debut mystery, Rest Now, Beloved to our library. The novel is set in San Diego in 1933 when a small child is found dead in the Bay. It interweaves two historic periods, 1933 and 1980. The intent of this novel was not to solve a crime, as a fictional novel might do, but rather to blur the line between fiction and true life, encapsulating history and its people. Was the child killed, or did he drown in San Diego Bay by accident? Don't miss this exciting historical fiction. You can check it out from our reserved section, "Resident Authors." When browsing for a new book remember we have "The Classics" section in the open book area. These books are available to all OHCC residents. Unlike reserved books, the "Classics" do not need to be checked out. Starting Sept. 1, our library will return to the original pre-COVID schedule except for Labor Day, Sept. 6 when it will be closed. Hours of operation for staffed service are Monday through Friday 10 am to 12 pm. Tuesday and Thursday 2 to 4 pm. Monday evenings 6 to 8 pm. Try to remember that kind of September. ~ Sally Benton Library Association SEPTEMBER BOOK BUYS The Community Image and Marketing Committee Now that many of the COVID restrictions have been lifted in our community, we hope you have been able to visit the recently redesigned Clubhouse and are enjoying the new interior amenities. A new resident recently commented how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful environment with such great amenities and extraordinary weather. Our new Clubhouse is another wonderful improvement we can all enjoy and appreciate. The Community Image and Marketing Committee continues to work with the Master Board on items relating to the redesign of front entry. At the August Master Board Meeting, the Committee provided a detailed implementation plan for consideration. We also submitted a formal recommendation to the Master Board regarding the flags at the front entry median. We are waiting for cooler weather to do the rotation and plant replacement of the outside blue pots around the Clubhouse. It is on the priority list, but please be patient. The Committee is working on an updated diagram of the Clubhouse interior, surrounding recreational areas and a Village map. Once completed, we will submit to the Master Board for review. The Committee continues to meet regularly each month to address issues and suggestions from residents and committees. We also work closely with the HOA to make sure we continue to enhance and improve our community image, to ensure consistency of our message and protect home values. We welcome all residents observations and comments.
