The Billiards Club July tournament was Modified 8-Ball (Key Ball).
A double elimination version was used was to keep more players
involved longer. Double elimination means a person must lose two
matches to be eliminated from play. As we play "Key Ball" here at
OHCC, the players must sink the #1 ball into the #2 pocket, and the
#15 ball into the #5 pocket. When "A" players competed against "B"
players, the "B" skilled player was given the opportunity to remove
three balls from the table to make their matches more even.
At tournament time we needed another player. In walked Janice
Pelcher and, reluctantly, she agreed to join the tournament. Well,
Janice won her first three matches sending Peter Fiore, Fred Ganoe,
and Ralph DiTursi to the loser's side of the bracket. Meanwhile, those
who knew how to play 8-Ball but were not familiar with the Key Ball
modification often got in trouble when their Key Ball was the last ball
on the table.
The loser's side of the bracket was where all the action took place
as Russ Kubart sent Gary Pelcher and Jim Kydd home. But then
Ralph DiTursi took out Russ in a hard-fought match. Meanwhile,
Charlie Payne was giving Kieth Bogost, Fred Ganoe and Cal Roe their
second losses.
John Mitchell, with his great cue ball control, never lost a game
to win the $50 1st place prize. Charlie Payne came out of the loser's
bracket to make the final and won $25 second place. Then Janice
Pelcher, a "B" player, got the $10 third prize for showing up and
playing very good pool.
