The Curfew
Every time I come through
one of the Colony gates,
whether it is the Nutmeg, Cal
Oaks or especially the Main
Gate, I smile to myself as I
remember how things were
in my early Colony days.
Two friends and I, all of us
newly widowed, would go
out dancing on Friday nights.
We'd be laughing as we left the
"compound" at 7:30 pm, making
fun of our older friends who were
just returning from an Early Bird
dinner.
I'll bet our new residents don't
know that all three of our gates
were locked down at 10 pm nightly
until just a few years ago. The
Resident's gate on the right had
orange cones placed in front of it at
10 pm. That meant that we had to
enter through the Guard's gate only.
Coming home from a great
evening of dancing, a few drinks
and fun, there we were, so proud
to have missed curfew. Acting like
teenage girls who were sneaking
back into a convent school and
giggling our way through the gate
and flirting with the guard, we
were so full of ourselves. Such
good memories!
So, this is my story. What
is your favorite story that
you'd like to share with
The Colony History
Committee? Five very
talented writers have
offered their time to meet
with you as you regale
your tales of yesteryear
at The Colony, or you can write
your own story. Please call me at
