On Sept. 30 the Billiards Club held a unique 9-Ball tournament.
The eight shooters played a complete round-robin match. That
meant that each player played all of the other seven players, and the
four players with the best record would play for the cash prizes.
9-Ball is a quick game where the object is to sink the 9-Ball for the
win, and a match generally lasts about five minutes. Leo Beeloo and
Charlie Payne, however, won their matches immediately as the 9-ball
was potted on the opening break shot. Another way to win is by a
combination shot where the cue ball first hits an object ball which
then bumps the 9-Ball into a called pocket.
In the first photo, we see Leo Beeloo lining up the purple 4-ball
with the yellow/white 9-ball sitting in front of the corner pocket.
Then Leo proceeded to hit the cue ball into the 4-ball, which then hit
the 9-ball into the pocket. The match was over with most of the balls
still on the table.
After all players had completed seven matches, Ralph DiTursi,
Fred Ganoe, John Prieskorn and Cal Roe were eliminated from the
cash paying final matches. It is of note that Leo Beeloo won all seven
of his matches plus his first semifinal for a total of eight wins in a
row – but it wasn't enough!
The semifinal matches were Leo Beeloo vs. Charlie Payne, and
Peter Fiore vs. Ken Schreiner. Charlie and Peter both won the semi
matches and played in the finals for the big cash leaving Leo and Ken
to compete for third place.
Leo made the shot described above to win third place. In the final
match, Charlie put too much thought into the position of the cue ball
and gave Peter an easy win for $50.
