| OHCC LIVING | NOVEMBER 2021 | 39 Racquet Club History was made at the 9th Annual Staff/Residents Water Volleyball match. The staff won the first two games, tying the record for the most games they ever won. They then proceeded to win the entire match! After 11 games they led 6-5, and the residents could have tied it by taking the final game, but they fell short. Final score? Staff 7, Residents 5. The great time continued afterwards with dinner on the Palm Court where the newly emboldened staff team challenged the residents to two staff-resident matches in 2022. Wait 'til next year! Meanwhile, regular water volleyball play is back to 2 to 4 pm Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. There is always room in the pool if you want to join in! The renovation projects at the courts and the golf course, while frustratingly prolonged, have given many players the opening to schedule long-postponed knee, hip, and shoulder procedures. Sunshine chair Donna Ryan has been busy getting out cheery "get well" cards to members over the past months while courtside there's always plenty of advice to be had about the best docs and rehab routines to follow once players are cleared to return to action. Smart play on the court – starting with wearing the right shoes and adhering to a warm-up routine – cannot be stressed enough. And whenever a ball is lobbed over your head, let it sail and call out "Nice shot!" Now that sports venues are letting fans back in – vax cards in hand – many Ocean Hills residents are venturing out to see live pro-am tennis and pickleball tournaments across Southern California from La Costa to Orange County to Indian Wells while others follow on TV or livestream on the Tennis Channel and the Pickleball Channel. Stay tuned next month for results of our own October paddle tennis and pickleball tournaments. Our club board works closely with Recreation Director Chris Bessey and facilities supervisor Ramon Vidrio to ensure the courts are well maintained. Resident cooperation is essential, so heed these reminders for you and your guests. Wear non-marking shoes. No pets on the courts, and no bicycles, scooters, or skateboards either. Spill a beverage? Clean it up immediately. Check before leaving for any personal items or trash left behind. Return pickleballs to the tubes when the game concludes. We just made a major investment in our courts. Please take good care of them! Residents suffer defeat at the hands of Staff Water Volleyball Team – a first! Dedicated players like Sue Petersen don't let small injuries keep them off the courts!
