40 | OHCC LIVING | NOVEMBER 2021 | A stiff breeze and shining blue seas, along with the command to "sheet in the main," is a fine way to spend your day. New crew members take a turn at the helm for the first time and look like they just crossed the equator and became a "Shellback member in Kin Neptune's kingdom. Aaaah yes, fellow shipmates telling tall stories, while the boat heels from the wind, and sharing finger food, as the sun begins to move closer to the horizon… and then someone says… "Hey why don't we go pull into the dock at Bali Hai and have a 5 o'clock glass of wine?" Once we are all tied up, we head along the rocking dock toward the bar and hear the sea gulls welcoming us. Another enjoyable day spent on the bay. If this sounds adventurous and fun, it is, and we hope you will think about joining us. Whether you have sailed before or you have no idea what the term "Traveler" means other than perhaps a person on vacation using AMTRAK to get away, now is the time to come aboard and join in as a new chapter begins for the Sailing Club. We recently held our club's Awards Night Dinner party along with a business meeting to hold our club elections for a new Board of officers. Awards and appreciation were given to those who had served the membership for many years. Our prior Board of officers, who were all stepping down, included Commodore Forrest Newburg, Vice Commodore Bill Crosby, Treasurer Allan Paloutzian, and Secretary Sally Booth. This was primarily made possible because three new members volunteered to fill three club positions, and they did so after being members for only one month. When this occurred two experienced captains stepped up and filled the leadership positions and the slate was complete. They were all then voted in, sworn in, and made official. The new officers are: Commodore Tom Murphy, Vice Commodore Jim Barbee, Fleet Captain Charlie Cappello, Treasurer Donna Ryan and Secretary Skip Maniscalco. Oh, and by the way Fleet Captain Charlie Cappello has a special offer for those members who would like to learn more about boat terminology, and how boats and sail rigging works or needs to be adjusted. This will be a great Beginning Sailing Workshop, a must to attend. The workshop is scheduled for Dec. 9 in the Mykonos room from 5 to 6:30 pm. Sign-ups will begin on Mon., Nov. 8 at the Club's reception desk with a cap limit of 30 members. So, sign up early and not miss out. Now with new people at the helm, the club is looking forward to more sailing opportunities, day trips and social events. So, let's cast off all lines and get underway. ~ Captain Forrest Newburg Sailing Club
