Jan. 17 is a second new year celebration. It's a new year or "birthday"
of the trees. "Tu B'Shevat" is a lesser-known Jewish holiday involving
a tree planting ceremony and celebration.
This holiday is believed to have originated as an agricultural
festival related to the onset of spring planting. It has evolved into an
ecological holiday that reminds us of our connection to mother earth
and our obligation to be caretakers of our precious environment.
Tu B'Shevat derived its name from the date on which the Holiday
occurs, the 15th of the month of Shevat. "Tu" represents the number
15 in the Hebrew numerology system, where letters have numerical
value. "Shevat" is a month in the lunar calendar. So, the holiday's
name means the 15th of Shevat. There is no special greeting for
this holiday other than the standard "Chag Sameach," which means
"Happy Holiday!"
