34 | OHCC LIVING | JANUARY 2022 | Garden Club Happy New Year to all! The Garden Club finished 2021 with its Annual Holiday Luncheon and Fashion Show in December. As always, this event is a favorite. Thank you to all who participated — especially our OHCC models! The Club will have a table at Do Dues Day on Jan. 8 where you can learn more about the Club and our plans for 2022. Dues are $10 for the year. You can also drop your check off in the Garden Club envelope at the Front Desk any time. We are planning another year of informative programs on various garden related topics as well as many other activities. Remember — the Garden Club meetings are every month on the second Wednesday in Abravanel Hall. Our speaker for the Jan. 8 meeting is Pat Flanagan, the owner and CEO of the Butterfly Farm in Encinitas. The Butterfly Farm is a non-profit established in 2012 dedicated to education and research of the Monarch butterfly. Pat will speak about the importance of conserving native butterflies and their habitats. He has been helpful to our new butterfly interest group here in Ocean Hills. The doors open at 9:30 am with coffee and goodies, and the program begins at 10 am. All residents and guests are welcome. Club leader and President Rich Halkyard continues to announce very good walks and hikes as we close the year 2021. We meet at 8:30 am in the overflow parking lot on the day of a hike, get organized, be sure we know driving directions to trail head's parking lot, and leave as a group. Anyone who wants to join us for the first time can easily find a ride to the trail from one of our experienced participants. No one has to go it alone. Show up at 8:30 am and we will welcome you to the group. Learn about hikes in January 2022 on our website jkamins37.wixsite.com/walkers-hikers Early December, we ventured to nearby Calavera Hills/Lake/Volcano. We found it interesting to hike a nearby trail, discover so much that is within such a short drive. On Dec. 9, we stayed in the "neighborhood" again, driving to the Leo Carrillo Ranch. Often on our hikes, we plan a lunch meeting place to share thought, talk about the hike, dine with friends. For example, after the Leo Carrillo hike, we met at Mrs. Taco on Melrose. Hike in the fresh air, lunch together — priceless. Our Club has a hike planning committee, members meet to plan hikes for the year. For 2021-22, that committee has five members — Barbara Sabin, Lori Smith, Larry Ward, Ron Lyon, and Bill Nupp. The latter, Bill Nupp, is an experienced OHCC hiker, often determines if a hike needs to be divided into a shorter walk and a longer hike. If this is the case, Rich Halkyard leads the hike, Bill leads the walk. We never head onto a trail without a leader. Both those men are outstanding leaders. Leadership — members Natalie Sentz and Don Dudley fall into that category strongly. This couple has planned a four-day trip hike to Asilomar Beach on the Monterey Peninsula. This club member trip will take place in April. A discussion of this trip will be featured in our February article in OHCC Living. Stop by our station on Do Dues Day Jan. 8. We look forward to welcoming active new members. Hikers will be at our station that day and can answer any questions you might have. Walkers and Hikers
