As we begin the new year, it's interesting to note that Julius Caesar instituted January 1 as the first day of the year. He did this to honor the month's namesake, Janus, the Roman god of beginnings, whose two faces allowed him to look back into the past and forward into the future. Looking back into the recent past, we learned that power outages can occur at any time, even Thanksgiving Day. To better prepare for future outages (unfortunately, they will happen), changes have been implemented that will improve communications and allow The Lodge to provide emergency lights and power when needed most. Our goal is to provide the Emergency Preparedness Committee (EPC) with the tools they require to help our residents most in need. We must also realize that each of us should be prepared when the next event occurs. Looking forward, this year we will develop a three to five year plan for our roads and streets. Asphalt roads generally last an average of 15 to 20 years with the right care. We have been able to maintain our streets by seal coating (applying a protective material to the surface of the asphalt) and crack filling (the most lethal problem a pavement can have). As we near the end of the projected life of our streets, more extensive repairs will be needed, namely R & R (Remove and Replace). This is a process used to replace pavement which has been affected by age, weather, or heavy use. It involves cutting around the edges of the asphalt, removing the old pavement and base material down to a structurally sound foundation. The work will be done in stages after we have determined the cost and established a timeline for the project. Every year, it is important for your Board to be guided by the doctrines we adopted in 2018. Board members will change in the future, but our Vision, Mission, and Values must stay constant. Our Mission Statement sums up our Purpose, Values, and Goals: "Preserve and enhance the quality of life and sense of community through effective management of the Association, enforcement of rules and covenants, preserve and enhance property values and support initiatives and capital improvements that benefit the greater good of the community.' One goal of the Mission Statement, "Preserve and enhance property values," involves many factors, one of which is the golf course around our community. Recently, members of the Board met with a representative of the new owner of the golf course. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss how we can work together to help the golf course achieve success and make Four Seasons a better place to live. Over the past year, the condition of the course has improved; however, more work needs to be done. We will continue encouraging the new owner to keep upgrading the course. As the quality of the course is enhanced, we all benefit. It is our neighbor, and we should do our part to help the course prosper. This means respecting its property and boundaries. By being a good neighbor we will be able to find common ground and resolve issues together. We hope to achieve a win-win relationship. Finally, Numerology is the esoteric study of numbers, normally credited to Pythagoras, a Greek philosopher. The Numerology meaning of 2022 is "Hope is ahead." This seems appropriate as we continue to struggle with COVID variants and try to regain our "normal" lifestyles. We wish you all a safe and prosperous new year. "Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow."
