"Gardening simply does not allow one to be mentally old, because too many hopes and dreams are yet to be realized." – Allan Armitage We're getting ready for our second meeting of the year. Members and visitors come to Main Clubhouse ballroom at 10 am to 12 pm on Wed., Feb. 9. (That's the second Wednesday of every month.) This program is timely since many of us are confused by the state law in effect this month. Cynthia Vant Hul will speak on SB1383 in detail. Only the facts will be provided by our educated spokesperson. Invite your friends and neighbors to join you for the important meeting. February is of course the month when chocolate sales skyrocket. The Garden Club generally helps Cupid out and will do so again — just in a different way. Rather than direct candy sales or pre-orders, $25 gift certificates redeemable in See's candy stores toward one a one-pound box of chocolates value $26.50. Get yours from Maureen Keeney at (951) 797-0011 to make your Valentine happy. At my first meeting I was surprised to find representatives from See's Candy had the program. Did you know THE famous candy scene with Lucy and Ethel was filmed in See's original manufacturing location in Los Angeles? With all the samples I received that day, I kind of felt like Lucy and Ethel — chocolate overload, but we know that never lasts long. A bonus, but not why my husband and I decided to become members, was we both had winning raffle tickets for flowers donated by Cherry Valley Nursery. Those petunias brighten our winter yard! The varied programs the friendly members told us about was the real reason we wanted to give membership a try. Pat Pennington can be reached at (951) 314-9229. He just added a hydroponic garden. I know nothing about this and will be curious to see the outcome.
