| OHCC LIVING | FEBRUARY 2022 | 15 Village Squares No crystal ball! As I write this column for February during the first week of January, I know that plans could change as we follow guidelines. However, as of this date we do have exciting and ambitious plans afoot to host an open house/first class on Feb. 16 from 6 to 8 pm. We have hired a caller to start us off on the new social square dance system of 50 calls. This will be an opportunity for beginner and more advanced dancers to participate in an evening where we can get moving again to the fun of square dance. The event is open to all, including non-members who may wish to see what square dancing all is about. So, feel free to invite your friends. We require proof of vaccination and masks, following our state and OHCC guidelines. We will provide individually packaged light refreshments, water, and coffee. This event is free to all. If you have a name badge, please wear it, and we will have others available. Please plan to join in the fun. If plans must change, we will inform you through our email system, but for now, all systems are a go! ~ Valerie Line Dancers Dance can effectively promote good health by improving cardiovascular fitness, strengthening muscles, increasing circulation, decreasing blood pressure, lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease, reducing stress, and many other positive benefits. Dancing will keep your mind active! That's why we do it. Although some of our songs are country western – most are not. Along with western music, we dance to artists such as Michael Bublé, Rod Stewart, Jim Croce, Shawn Mendes and Camilla Cabello with songs like Blame it on the Bossa Nova, Caught in the Moonlight, Cake by the Ocean, etc. Line dance classes are once a week: Beginner (1): Tuesday from 10:30 – 11:30 am Improver (2): Monday from 12:30 – 2 pm Intermediate (3): Thursday from 2:30 – 4 pm Want to try it out? Come on by. Beginner's class is $5. Other levels are $7. You do not have to be a club member for the first couple of 'try it' classes. After that you will also need to join the club. Dues are $10/year. If you are interested in participating in our activities and are not sure who to reach out to for further information, please call Sunny Griffin (970) 708-0443. We will dance to the music of the Alias Band, one of our most popular dance bands. The cost will be $15 for members and $20 for non-members. We will be setting up for tables of eight. Give your check to the front desk by Fri., Feb. 4 and, if desired, indicate your preference for your table mates. Our monthly dances are on the second Friday of the month from 7 to 10 pm. (The times will vary for dinner dances.) The dance music is typically provided by a live band. The Ballroom Dance Club offers lessons on Wednesdays, weekly starting Feb. 2 in Abravanel Hall. Beginner lessons are at 2 pm and Intermediate lessons are at 3 pm. Cost is $7 for members and $10 for non-members. Pay at the door (no reservations required, just come). Carrie Kloss, a championship dancer and professional instructor, provides the dance instruction. We will begin the new year with Cha- Cha dance lessons. Cha-Cha is a fun dance that originated in Cuba and evolved from a slow version of Cuban Mambo. It became very popular in the United States in the mid-1950s. It has been described as an "exuberant dance that will get your heart pumping and put a smile on your face." Cha-Cha has become one of the most popular Latin dances in the world. The Ballroom Dance Club has Practice Parties on Mondays, weekly starting on Feb. 7 in Abravanel Hall from 2:30 to 4:30 pm. Experienced OHCC dancers will review Wednesday's lessons and provide help upon request. You can practice your dancing to a variety of ballroom music. The party is FREE, just drop in.
