Staying home more because of another resurgence of COVID has given us a chance for more self-improvement. Long overdue is getting "IT" right… "IT" being lyrics to songs that we have been faking for 40 years. Let's face it, we are all guilty of misheard lyrics, for instance: From Jimi Hendrix: Purple Haze Misheard Lyrics: "'Scuse me while I kiss this guy." Actual Lyrics: "'Scuse me while I kiss the sky." From Creedence Clearwater Revival: Bad Moon Rising Misheard Lyrics: "Don't go around tonight / Well, it's bound to take all night / There's a bathroom on the right." Actual Lyrics: "Don't go around tonight / Well, it's bound to take your life / There's a bad moon on the rise." From Bob Dylan: Blowin' In The Wind Misheard Lyrics: "The ants are my friends, they're blowin' in the wind." Actual Lyrics: "The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind." From The Beatles: Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds Misheard Lyrics: "The girl with colitis goes by." actual lyrics: "The girl with kaleidoscope eyes." Or like Abba said: "See that girl, watch that scene, diggin' the dancing queen" (not: "See that girl, watch her scream, me an' the dancing queen"). Didn't they also say, "Dancing Queen, young and sweet; only seventy." 14 | OHCC LIVING | FEBRUARY 2022 | Doo Wop and Disco Dance Club Most ballet troupes in the United States earn much of their money for the year with their productions of the Nutcracker during the December holiday season. Little ballerinas are especially drawn to this story of Clara's dream of the toy nutcracker and his friends. I took my granddaughter to see this ballet for the first time when she was five. We went to the performance by the San Francisco Ballet at the beautiful and ornate opera house. After watching the performance, Abby insisted that she would one day be part of this troupe. She joined the school affiliated with the San Francisco Ballet and, when she was nine and old enough, she auditioned, and the Nutcracker became a big part of our Christmas celebrations. The first year, she was a ladybug. In subsequent years, she was in various roles, showing her increasing talent. Finally in 2019, she was old enough and in a high enough level to be considered for the role of Clara. She opened the season and was a joyful lead. During the pandemic, she did several hours a day of Zoom classes, and when in- person classes resumed, she danced at least five hours a day. She made the decision to enroll in an alternative high school so that she could attend dance classes from noon to 6 pm every day. After no show in 2020, when auditions opened this year, she was asked to again take on the Clara role. Watching her, I could see how much she has improved in the last two years and how much she still loves ballet. As she came out at the end of the performance, smiling as she took her final bows in front of a packed house and enthusiastic crowd, this grandmother's heart was full, and she couldn't help a few tears as she thought about the five-year old Abby and her determination.
