| OHCC LIVING | FEBRUARY 2022 | 39 Racquet Club The January rain and cold did not deter the many hearty souls who ventured out to play tennis, paddle tennis, and pickleball during the beginning days of 2022. While players arrived at the courts in jackets and caps, once the games got underway, they started shedding their layers as play heated up. The new year signaled the return of Mike Hoggatt's Intro to Pickleball five-session class with many residents who have never played pickleball coming out to give it a try. The summer-long beginner class is scheduled for late spring. More than a dozen OHCC residents trekked out to Indian Wells Tennis Garden in December to take in the Margaritaville USA Pickleball National Championships. Over 2,300 players, including OHCC's David Levine, competed in the pro-am event. David and his partner battled their way to a fourth place finish in the Men's Doubles age/skill 4.0: 65+. Racquet Club members in attendance were motivated by the quality of play and returned home with a clear realization that "practice makes perfect." Pickleball is not just for seniors! If you don't play, at least encourage your grandchildren to give it a try! Are you someone who enjoyed playing tennis years ago, but can't imagine trying it again — just too much running around and too hard on the knees? If so, why not consider Paddle Tennis? You'll be able to use all the skills and strategy from your tennis-playing days on a much smaller court with a less-bouncy ball. We have loaner paddles and free instruction available… and a lively group of regulars who are always happy to welcome new players. Contact us at ohrchelp@ gmail.com if you are interested in upcoming opportunities to learn Paddle Tennis. The Racquet Club lost two favorite players in December. WWII Navy veteran Harrison Frank transitioned from paddle tennis to pickleball in 2017 and played at the HOA daily until late 2019. Air Force veteran and long-time paddle tennis player Dean Murphy had recently returned to weekly paddle tennis games. Pandemic concerns caused the postponement of our March 5 party, but plans are underway for a late spring event – fingers crossed! Contact the Racquet Club Help Desk at ohrchelp@gmail.com with your court sport questions or to put your name on the interest list for our classes. Levine's OHCC rooting section at Pickleball Nationals David Levine made OHCC proud with his National Championship play 94-year-old Harrison Frank playing pickleball in late 2019 Not much to report at the moment, since as we all know there isn't any golf happening right now. But here is some random information to keep everyone up to date. There have been two changes in committee chairs: Tom Vaccaro is our new membership chair and Natalie Sentz is the new chair of the rules committee. Thanks to Marjorie Humphry and Doug Wright who previously held these roles. The golf cage is open so start practicing your swing. We currently have 419 members, 246 men and 173 women. Touring Amateurs will begin in April at Oaks North. We expect eight tournaments this year. The yardage of the newly redone eighth hole will be 220 yards. Fore! And finally, as everyone is aware by now, our president Grady Machnick passed away in December. He was a tireless leader of our club. Grady, you will be missed. Rest in peace. Golf Club Happy Valentine's Day. We hope you enjoy it with all your heart. We hope many of you have signed up by now for the 2022 Membership to the OH Senior Fitness Club for only $5. Just leave your check at the front desk if you have not already done so. We exercise the body doing Yoga, in a chair and/or behind the chair, for one hour every Monday and Wednesday from 11:15 until 12:15 pm in the Abravanel Hall with Instructor Cheryl Todd. Come a bit early and you can sign up in the Lobby and pay $5 per class attended which goes to the instructor. In addition, we have a class on Tuesday from 8to 9 am called Chair-to-Mat Yoga using a chair and a mat on the floor. This class is taught by our own OHCC Resident Tatis Cervantes-Aiken for free in the Clubhouse. Please come early since the class fills up quickly and only 15 people can exercise at one time in the space provided in the Majorca Room. Senior Fitness Club
