CLUB NEWS | THE COLONY NEWS | MARCH 2022 | 39 Springtime brings warmer temperatures, longer hours of daylight and more players to the pickleball courts! We welcome all players to join us morning, noon and night as we fill the courts with games, tournaments and workshops taking place daily. To take part in any or all the fun, please contact me. We welcome all levels of players, and I will be very happy to teach you the basics of the game at no charge. Call me to set up the most convenient time to meet at the courts and become a member of the ever-growing pickleball family! On Saturday, Feb. 5, we filled the courts with players at every level competing in the latest tournament. Ten women competed in the round robin event and Denise Groll emerged as the winner in the Women's Division. In the Men's Division, 14 players battled to the end, and Joey Santiago once again tied for first place, this time with Chuck Gordon (with help from pinch-hitter, Gregg Ross). If you have never witnessed 24 adults combating for the crown, I invite you to join us for our next tournament that will take place on the morning of Saturday, March 5. And a special shout out to Thea and Tony Johnson, who are on the courts constantly, playing and practicing and having more fun than anyone can imagine. They are two great ambassadors to the sport of pickleball! If you are cruising past the pickleball courts and see people behaving like kids and having a ridiculous amount of fun, please contact me to become part of the family. We welcome one and all! First of all, we all had an opportunity to wish Heinz Kahl (photo at left) a very happy 92nd birthday! He is one of two nonagenarian's bowling with us. Ralph Sanzari, who I believe is 93, is the other. Heinz has a 146 average, and Ralph's is 153. Not bad, you two! Keep up the great bowling! Frank Hattabaugh and Carol Hitchcock have increased their averages by 14 and 16 pins, respectively, and they are both to this date the most improved bowlers since week one. Hot Shotzz (Olivia Perez, Frank Hattabaugh, Steve Austin) are still in first place at the time of this article, and Strikes Happen (Jim Wheeler, Ed Munro, Jerry Hansen) in 2nd place. Pin Poppers (Sheila Spralding, Dottie Hodson, and Lynn Ennes) are in 3rd place. Year to date: Men's High Game Scratch: Hank Fleischer, 244; Men's High Series Scratch: Sam Hitchcock, 638; Men's High Handicap Game: Andy Sciacca, 270; and Men's High Series Handicap Series: Bob Senenfelder, 720. On the Women's Side, High Game Scratch: Jerry Hansen, 234; High Series Scratch: Jerry Hansen, 615; High Game Handicap: Norris Day, 269; and High Series Handicap: Carol Hitchcock, 707. I am still hoping that the HOA will allow us to hang our Bowling History Plaque in the Clubhouse. Del Mitchum and Bruce Dalfonso are trying very hard to get this done. Thank you both for your efforts.
