Rhys Bowen & Clare Broyles April: The Month of Reawakening "Today is the day when bold kites fly, when cumulus clouds roar across the sky, when birds return, when light rain beckons spring to appear." As I read this quote by Robert McCracken, I was reminded that it was only a year ago that a small hummingbird picked our entry patio tree to build its nest. It brought hope during a time of isolation and challenge. This April brought a new bird that picked the same home to build its nest, on the exact same branch, and like before, two baby hummingbirds were born. The winds came, the tree blew, and I awoke to find the nest gone, along with the mother. Searching frantically for the nest, I discovered it upside down by the door. By some miracle, the birds where still tucked within its shelter. I rushed them to the Humane Society where they were immediately taken to the bird sanctuary. Although one died, the other managed to survive against all odds. It was as if this small creature was determined to go forth and find the gift of life. It symbolized the hope that we all long for and often find in the smallest of things. Like this small bird, April is the month of reawakening. Within this month, we celebrate Easter, Ramadan, Earth Day and Autism Month to mention just a few. In the 1950s, the American Library Association found that people were reading less, spending less on books and more on television. A committee was formed to encourage people to read and to support their local libraries. In 1958 "The National Library Week" was established as the first week of April with the theme "Wake Up and Read!" Out of this historical movement, National Librarian Day was formed. April 16 is now the day set aside to be thankful for all the knowledge these librarians possess and the time they give to all of us. They have often been stereotyped as bespectacled older ladies who are merely book-slingers that constantly "shush" their patrons and spend their time cataloging and reshelving books. However, across history they have played a much more important role. In many of our public libraries, these librarians offer children story time, and literacy classes. They make purchasing decisions and adapt to new technology and the social needs of their communities. They are often liaisons to local schools. OHCC is fortunate to have these volunteers who give endlessly of their time. Come celebrate National Librarian Day with us and say thanks to our awesome volunteers who are always on hand to help. ~ Sally Benton Library Association APRIL BOOK BUYS
