40 | OHCC LIVING | APRIL 2022 | Bocce Club Every Wednesday starting at 2 pm, members gather at the courts to meet new people and grow friendships in a game of Bocce. You don't have to be member to participate, so come join us any Wednesday afternoon it's not raining. March came in with a roar, with over 40 people signed up for Bocce Training. For many, this will be their first time on the courts. Casino Night planning for May 20, is in full swing. Blackjack, Roulette and Craps will be under the Lanai tent and outside on the dance floor. Watch for the flyers for more party details. Tickets go on sale April 20 to club members. Any remaining tickets will be made available to non-members after May 1. Making a bocce is a highlight of bocce play; in February, members earned 143 bocces. The top three ladies are Fran Goldstein, Mary Yotter and Dea Abdelaziz. The top three men were John Abdelaziz, Michael Simons and Tom Silva. Led by Club leader and President Rich Halkyard on each outing, we have increased our hikes this year, with planned hikes on Thursdays and Fridays, at least three each month (weather permitting), and additional exploratory sessions on Saturdays for those who may not be free during the week because of other obligations. These Saturday hikes explore the terrain of upcoming hikes, as Leader Rich Halkyard has others join him to make sure an upcoming hike is safe for all of us. Such hikes also allow Rich to determine driving directions to the trail head and note parking places. We meet in the overflow parking lot on hiking days, with an 8:30 am gathering time; we then get directions to the trailhead, make driving arrangements for all of us, and get any other information we may need. Our hikes throughout March were basically local — Hospital Grove trail in Carlsbad on the 3rd, Lake Hodges on the 18th for example. Often, we finish hikes late enough in the mornings that we can pre-arrange lunching together somewhere near where we have hiked. A major hiking event in April for 30 enthusiastic members is a four-day trip to California's Monterey area. The home base will be the Pacific Gardens Inn in Pacific Grove, just north of Monterey. Arrival day is Mon., April 25, with hikes scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Hikes will include easy coastal hikes and moderate inland hikes, including caves and some boulder scrambling. In the next issue of OHCC Living there will be a full report of this hike, accompanied by photographs. Such a trip is a highlight of the year, along with a second such overnight trip in the fall hiking season. Trip leaders to the Monterey area are experienced hikers from our community — Natalie Sentz and Don Dudley. A major thank you goes out to this couple for their planning and their guidance. Information on anything walkers/hikers can be found on our website: https:// kamins37.wixsite.com/walkers-hikers. You can always call our President Rich Halkyard at (202) 889-8506. Hopefully, if you are contemplating joining this health/exercise-oriented club, you will meet us at the overflow parking lot for our first hike in April. Check out the website. You will enjoy the camaraderie, as you meet new people and head for the outdoors. Walkers and Hikers Wednesday afternoon play and social
