| OHCC LIVING | APRIL 2022 | 41 Swim, Surf & Wellness Member Spotlight - Four mornings every week, at 6 am, you will find Ken Krueger swimming laps. Ken is a life-long swimmer who started out in San Fernando in the family's backyard pool. A friend encouraged him to join the swim team and he was eventually offered scholarships at both Berkeley and USC. He was an NCAA champion at USC, then proceeded to become a teacher and coach, teaching English and history at the secondary level. At the college level, Ken taught nutrition and exercise, which he calls "the health twins." Ken swam in Masters meets all over the world. One highlight was competing at the Olympic stadium in Helsinki. Another was beating "the last guy who beat Mark Spitz" in Stockholm. He served as nutritionist for the Swiss and U.S. Olympic teams at various times. Ken has four sons, one who lives in Italy and three living in Southern California. He and wife Pat have lived in OHCC for about five years, and they have 16 grandchildren. Ken is also one of our club's swim instructors. We offer free swim lessons to any resident who asks, from fearful beginners to those wanting breathing and stroke technique instruction. Contact Ken at k2krueger@yahoo.com for more information and how to get involved. The Swim Surf & Wellness club invited the entire OHCC community to our February meeting, which was held on the Palm Court in the afternoon. President Robin Bleeker, retired physical therapist, gave an excellent presentation about preventing falls. This is an important topic, as falls are the number one cause of injury and hospitalization in the OHCC-age group. Robin explained the many reasons that people fall, and offered suggestions for how to make our homes safer. We learned how to assess our own risk of falling as well as some simple exercises to decrease the likelihood of a fall. "Exercise of some kind or another is almost essential to the preservation of health in persons of all ages - but in none more so than the old." ~ Dr. Daniel MacLachlan, 1863. Still valid in 2022! SSW has welcomed a new group. The Stretch and Balance class will now fall under the auspices of our Swim Surf & Wellness club. Developing strength, stability and balance contributes greatly to aging well. Stretch and Balance is a video led class that meets three times per week. On Mondays, class is from 9 to 10 am in either Abravanel Hall or the Majorca Room. On Wednesdays and Fridays, you'll find us in the Mykonos Room from 8:45 to 9:45 am. The class is always free and is open to all residents. Join us! SSW is looking for new members! Are you interested in being more involved in all pool-related issues? Want to learn more about health and wellness in our age group? Contact Sara Stewart at s.stewart1@ att.net for more information. Or just drop off a $10 check made out to the OHCC Swim Surf & Wellness club at the Clubhouse. Be sure to include name, address, phone and email. President Robin Bleeker addresses the group. Robin teaches the group how to do the 30 second chair stand. Ken Krueger, 6 am swimmer
