18 SOLERA DIAMOND VALLEY | APRIL 2022 By Theresa Rossetti, Resident Recently a former co-worker (much younger than I) posted this online. I recognized all but one song immediately. I was proud of myself. That got me thinking about the different generations. According to my extensive research (AKA googling), there are members of seven generations alive currently. The majority of the recognized generations span approximately 15 years, the exception being the Greatest Generation, born between 1901 and 1927. After them, from 1928-1945 comes the Silent Generation, then 1946-1964 for the Baby Boomers, followed by Gen Xers born between 1965-1980, Millennials, 1981-1995, Gen Z 1996-2010 and finally Alpha Generation, 2010 on. Those born in the Silent Generation were alive during WWII but unlikely to have been in service at that time. In a survey, every generation from the Boomers to Gen Z named 9/11/2001 as the most historic event in their lifetime. Boomers named JFK's assassination as the second, while Millennials and Gen Xers name the election of President Obama as the second. Interestingly enough, the Silent Generation has oversized power in comparison to their population in billionaire wealth, Baby Boomers have more Chief Justices and State Governors, Gen X more in film and TV but also in City Councils and small business ownership. Unsurprisingly, Millennials lead in digital platforms, celebrities, and music. Currently, Boomers have the greatest economic and political power but lag behind Gen X in cultural power. When our community opened in 2007, the oldest Baby Boomer would have been 61, so it's safe to say some moved here at that time. I'm guessing though that a large number of the new residents were from the Silent Generation. We also had some members of the Greatest Generation move in then. Since we live in a 55+ community, just doing the math tells us that we now have Gen Xers eligible to live here. So, what's my point? Given the number of homes that have been sold here in the past few years, welcome to the Xers, who should recognize most of these songs, have less achy joints and/or replaced body parts than many of us, and look forward to enjoying our beautiful community and its amenities for many years to come!
