| OHCC LIVING | MAY 2022 | 37 Village Vets I hope everyone enjoyed our speakers at our March Village Vets get-together from CWO Kevin Bentle, Enforcement Division at San Diego Coast Guard Sector, Victor Gonzales from Caption Call and Larry Soukup, for the Vista Military War Memorial. There was a lot of good information put forth. We did not have a Village Vets General Meeting in April. In May, we will have our Village Vets General Meeting starting at 2 pm on Sat., May 21 at the Clubhouse Lanai under the tent. We will be having a barbecue, FREE for all our currently paid members. For alcoholic beverages, it will be BYOB. We want our veterans to get re-acquainted with each other. We also invited Marines from the 1st ANGLICO at Camp Pendleton. In addition to attending, they will address their mission and other items of interest. We also plan on having a second guest speaker. We also plan to have an offsite during July for our members, and currently working out the details and logistics of the trip. If you still have not joined us this year, your $10 check per person marked "2022 Dues" can be left at the front desk at the Clubhouse, in the Vet's Club folder. Just a quick reminder: The DOD has changed their Military I.D. Cards with a new design and additional security. If you have an older military I.D. card and it is expired, current or classified as indefinite, it should be replaced by June 30, 2022. A new card can be issued at Camp Pendleton for all military services. You can check at the entrance gate for the location of the badge issuing location. 18 RVs eagerly headed out to Casa Grande, AZ to catch some sunshine and explore the area. Many enjoyed attending a preseason Colorado Rockies vs Arizona Diamondbacks game played at the beautiful baseball complex, Salt River Fields at Talking Point. It has been built with private capital on Indian land specifically for MLB Spring Training games. Some took an interesting and informative tour of the 1,400-acre Caywood Cotton Farm. Seated on hay bales placed in a farm cart, they were towed around the spread, hearing the trials, tribulations and complications of running a modern-day farm. With substantial Government planting regulations, concerns about the cost and supply of water (in the desert) and weather risks added by Mother Nature, it made for a thoughtful tour. The Desert Botanical Garden, which included a butterfly garden, proved to be a great spot! They were lucky enough to see the temporary colorful art works by noted studio glass artist Dale Chihuly, interspersed among the Museum's permanent cacti and succulents. A great display of the creativity of Man alongside the creativity of Nature. A delicious lunch on the sunny patio at "Gertrude's," made for a delightful day at the Garden. Rooster Cogburn Ostrich Ranch is north of Tucson along Rte. 10. In addition to raising ostriches (which visitors can feed), it houses a large petting zoo and a sting ray pool, all of which amused our RVers for quite a while. With some enjoying golf and always time for a happy hour around the RVs, the group had an active and enjoyable trip. Those who attended the FMCA rally in Tucson appreciated the professionally presented RV seminars, as there is always something new to learn about an RV. The dry camping on the County fair property, however, had its challenges with "Goat Head" stickers attaching themselves to the feet of Man and Beast. The next RV adventure to Arizona starts May14, heading to Prescott, Williams, and the Grand Canyon with many continuing to Page, Lake Powell and Antelope Canyon. Our next regular meeting will be in Abravanel Hall on May 24; social time begins at 6:30 pm and the business meeting is at 7 pm. RV Club From one old goat to another!
