18 | OHCC LIVING | MAY 2022 | After two successful showings of "Dancing under the Big Top," the dance troupe took April off. Now we are ready to start again with our jazz, tap, Hawaiian, ballet and belly dance classes. Now is the perfect time for you to join us. You can take any or all of the classes. The jazz and tap classes are on Thursday, ballet on Wednesday and the Hawaiian and belly dance lessons are on Saturday mornings. The Dance Troupe welcomes new members whether you are new to dance or have experience. If you ask the existing members, they will tell you that they are in the troupe because it is fun. We exercise both our bodies and our minds while learning lively dances. Many studies have shown that dancing is one of the best ways to keep your mind and memory strong. Ask some of our 80+ dancers and they will tell you dancing keeps you young. And even better, dancing with the troupe gives you a chance to befriend other Ocean Hills dancers, both new and experienced. Plus, you will get to wear some fantastic costumes and wow your friends and families at our next show. If you are interested in tap or jazz, please contact us at ohccdancetroupe@gmail.com. If you are interested in Hawaiian dancing, please contact Valerie Thompson at valgene2@cox.net. If you are interested in belly dancing, please contact Sharon Lair at (760) 822-2670. And to join our new ballet class, please contact Diane Hillman at drdianehillman@icloud.com. Ocean Hills Dance Troupe Line Dancers How's your brain? When you exercise, the levels of chemicals in your brain that encourage nerve cells to grow is increased and since dancing requires you to remember various steps and sequences, your brain power is boosted, which helps to improve your memory! Also dancing incorporates several brain functions at once – kinesthetic, rational, musical and emotional. Utilizing all of these at the same time can further increase your neural activity, helping reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease and dementia. It's a lot of fun too! Although some of our songs are country western – most are not. Just last week we were learning a dance to Hernando's Hide-away, a tango! Line dance classes are once a week: Beginner (1): Tues. 10:30 – 11:30 am Improver (2): Mon. 12:30 – 2 pm Intermediate (3): Thurs. 2:30 – 4 pm (schedule may vary, call Sunny to confirm) Want to try it out? Come on by. Beginner's class is $5 (60 minutes). Other levels are $7 (90 minutes). You do not have to be a club member for the first couple of 'try it' classes. After that, you will also need to join the club. Dues are $10/year. If you are interested in participating in our activities and are not sure who to reach out to for further information, please call Sunny Griffin at (970) 708-0443.
