Art Lovers
What a wonderful group of 33 Art Lovers carpooled to Oceanside
Museum of Art to view their Fifth Biennial Artist Alliance exhibit.
Our exuberant guide, Susan Posner delighted us with "inside
stories" of several artists and what inspired their award-winning
work. First Place winner Lucy Boyd-Wilson's Frail Land was created
as an immersive digital art that moves in tune with the musical
accompaniment. Boyd-Wilson is a computer technologist and video
game developer and enjoys using her skills in her art. Award-winning
work, Begins with Tea by Tinh Mai consists of 208 tiny family photos
painted on joss paper with grains, seeds, herbs and dried noodles all
encased in used tea bags from the artist's grandmother's kitchen. As
the grandmother sipped her tea, she shared stories of her childhood
which the artist incorporated into these delicate packets.
Upstairs, Oceanside Unfiltered features an exhibit of photographic
scenes around Oceanside. Especially poignant were the large
exquisitely photographed depictions of homeless people by Jordan
Verdin. There were comments from each person about how they
became homeless and their hopes for their futures.
Many members and guests joined us for a lively lunch at Hello
Betty Fish House. Some walked across the street to the Seabird
Resort to view the OMA West Gallery including the stunning fabric
artwork of Michelle Montjoy which hangs in one of the lobbies. You
can see more of this gallery by visiting https://theseabirdresort.com/
art-work. Montjoy's work is a multi-year collaboration of many
members of the community who wove the strands of cut up t-shirts
that were obtained from local thrift shops.
The Mingei International Museum in Balboa Park is our
destination on Thurs., May 19. We will meet the bus in the Overflow
Lot at 8:30 am. The cost for the trip is $55 for members and $60
for non-members. The price includes the bus fare, driver tip and
docent-led tour. The Mingei features art from around the globe with
an emphasis on self-taught artists using common materials. One
of the exhibitions there is Fold, Twist and Tie, featuring whimsical
and sculptural hats made of paper bags created by self-taught artist,
Moses.
