| LIFE IN SOLERA | MAY 2022 | 21 HIGH NOTES FROM KARAOKE At our April meeting Richard Crowe shared an interesting perspective into life as it was on a Colonial American farm: e.g., buildings, tools, the importance of apples, making their own clothes, and how wild critters were dealt with. At the May 2 (4:30 to 5:30 pm) meeting Richard will give a review (a sort of travel log) of his time with the U.S. Navy in Vietnam (1970- 1971) and what he observed that has changed/not changed from his 2019 return. As a sneak preview, two 1971 photos are shown here: 1) kids with their "fighting" crickets, and 2) Mekong River housing. HISTORY GROUP Cousins – We all have some cousins in our family tree, but what is a cousin? Merriam-Webster dictionary defines a cousin as "a child of one's uncle or aunt" or "a relative descended from one's grandparent … by two or more generations in a different familial line." As you add ancestors to your tree, a cousin to you will be shown as a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. cousin. This is known as its "degree." You may also have a cousin defined as being "removed" (1x, 2x, 3x, etc.). A cousin's degree defines the separation of generations, i.e. 1st cousin is two generations from the common ancestor. The removal number pertains to the difference in generations between two cousins relative to the cousin's common Ancestor. Fortunately, you usually don't have to figure this out as most family tree programs figure the relationship out for you. Also, you can Google 'cousins' and a chart showing the relationships is available. An interesting sideline to cousins is their relationship as relates to marriage between them. The marriage of 1st and 2nd cousins to each other is not generally accepted in many societies and yet in some societies (particularly in the Middle East countries) many marriages are arranged and are between 1st or 2nd cousins. In the U.S., many states have laws against the marriage of 1st cousins with each other. In 2014, 24 states prohibited marriage between 1st cousins and 19 states allow these marriages and seven states allow limited marriage between 1st cousins. When you encounter this situation on cousins marrying cousins, it is a red flag that you may not have the right people in those positions and double checking is needed. However, intermarriage between cousins is usually very limited in a given tree. It is more apt to occur further back in a tree, because the pool of perspective marrying adults was very limited and transportation between rural towns was limited as people colonized various areas of particularly the U.S. ~ Bill Cramsie ANCESTRY GROUP I recently ran across a very interesting article about the month of May with regards to the various holidays in this month alone.
