GOLF CLUB | LIFE IN SOLERA | MAY 2022 | 31 Long-time and popular Club member, Mike Miller passed away in early April THE HISTORY OF RADIO The Solera Radio Club (FCC License KC6SRC) is exploring the interesting evolution of the "radio." Our series started with the creation of the radio and the subsequent reliance on the little noise box. The word "radio" was coined by Edouard Branly, a French Physicist in the year 1897. The word is based on the verb to radiate. The word "radio" appeared in a 1907 article by Lee De Forest. The United States Navy adopted the term "radio," in 1912. The word became popular in the 1920s in the United States. There were many instances of harmful interference by unlicensed radio experimenters with governmental and commercial operations. In 1910, Congress passed the Wireless Ship Act, which required many ships to carry wireless equipment and operators. With the passing of the Wireless Ship Act, the U.S. Navy became the licensing authority for all radio operators. The licensing process covered technology knowledge and good safety practices. Those same protocols are shared with the current Federal Communications Commission (FCC) stands. TRIVIA ANSWER FOR APRIL: Question: What are spark gap transmissions? A spark-gap transmitter is an obsolete type of radio transmitter which generates radio waves by arcing electrical discharges between two charged points. The electrical arcing often caused a spark between the point gaps, hence the name of the device. The telegraph was the first use of spark-gap transmitters.
