| LIFE IN SOLERA | JUNE 2022 | 21 Other Sources for Names Ancestry is all about names and the information that accompanies a given name or its family. When looking up names, you have thousands of options. There are the big data bases such as Ancestry. com, FamilySearch.com, MyHeritage.com and many more that contain names and other information about those names. However, there are thousands of other data bases with names and information not only about the person, but also additional information on the family to which they belong. Some of the information you may find is the vital statistics such as birth, marriage, and death information. There are other databases which can range from "Googling" databases that are associated with various religions such as Jewish databases, Protestant databases like those for the Church of Ireland or Catholic Parish records, Quaker church records and hundreds more depending on where and when the name you are researching may have existed. When it comes to vital statistics for a name, there are various state, county, university, and country archives that may be helpful. If you are fortunate enough to be looking for a person of the Peerage or Nobility, then there are books, such as Burke's Peerage of England, Ireland, etc., that have them listed with their titles and many of that person's relatives. Some countries have centralized record repositories for individuals. For example, there is the National Irish Archives in Dublin; however, for records prior to 1922 you may have to go to a specific parish record since a fire in 1922 destroyed many of the records. However, in Northern Ireland there is the Public Records Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) that has many of the records for individuals from towns and parishes in Ulster Province. Sometimes you even hit the "Mother Lode" for an individual or a family and find at a local or university library a book that covers the individual or a complete family history. This may also apply to people associated with a major event. For example, the passengers on the Mayflower are listed online and in many cases have them connected to various current persons. Fortunately, or unfortunately, there are thousands of possible sources to research for a given name. It's a treasure hunt when you're looking to find those nuggets of information on a person, so happy hunting! ~ Bill Cramsie ANCESTRY GROUP
