I almost hate to say it, but we are six months into the year already. Half a year under our belts. Where has the time gone? I can say for Bunco it has been a blast. Each month our club grows. We have so much fun just throwing three little dice around and hoping we can call out Bunco. Some months these ladies can rack up the bunco points. It is always a challenge to see who has the most Buncos. We invite you to join us for an afternoon of laughter. We meet on the fourth Friday of the month in the Card Room at 12:45 and play starts promptly at 1 pm. Please call Julie Rodrigues at (951) 821-1970 if you would like to sign up or cancel your seat. We do not accept walk-ins as we have limited seating. At the time of you calling to sign up if you are new we will go over the guidelines and rules beforehand, so you will be ready to play. If you've never played Mexican Train, don't let that keep you from checking it out. It's a game played with dominoes and it's very easy to learn. We play on Tuesday evenings at 6 pm in The Lodge Multipurpose Room and would really enjoy seeing some new faces at the tables; everyone is welcome. Mah-Jongg Club The MahJongg Club invites you to join us and enjoy playing this game which dates back hundreds of years. If you are curious about the game, come and learn how to play! If you are an experienced player who is new to our community, please come and join our group. We play every Monday and Thursday from 1 to 3 pm in the Multipurpose Room. If you want to learn how to play, we have written instructions, and someone is always available to teach you. You are welcome to come and observe anytime we are playing. We also have birthday luncheons, holiday parties and other get-togethers throughout the year. Bid Whist Plus Social Club We meet the first Friday of the month from 2 to 5:30 pm in The Lodge Game Room and share a potluck. On June 17, we are sponsoring a Juneteenth Music Dance Party to celebrate our nation's Juneteenth holiday. We will have live music on the plaza from Motown Soundz, DJ music from Art Martel and we will have Soul Food Menu sales from the So Cheesy Food Truck. Sales of $20 general tickets for table seating starts May 11 from 8 to 10:30 am. BYOB. One of our own distinguished club members is sharing his perspective on the Juneteenth holiday. He was inducted into the Naval Postgraduate School Hall of Fame, for being a leader, warfighter, trailblazer, and former Commander, Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, the highest-ranking Black Naval officer of his time, Vice Admiral Edward Moore, Jr USN (Ret). Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. The celebrations that followed the reading of a proclamation by Major General Gordon Granger in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865, began a tradition that has lasted for157 years, and today is hosted in cities across America and beyond. During the early years, a range of activities were provided to entertain the masses, many of which continue in tradition today. Rodeos, fishing, barbecuing, and baseball are just a few of the typical Juneteenth activities. Juneteenth also focuses on education and self-improvement. Often guest speakers are brought in and elders are called upon to recount the events of the past. Prayer services have also been a major part of these celebrations. Today, Juneteenth is enjoying phenomenal growth within communities and organizations throughout the country. Institutions such as the Smithsonian, the Henry Ford Museum and others have begun sponsoring Juneteenth-centered activities. A number of local and national Juneteenth organizations have also been established with the mission to promote and cultivate knowledge and appreciation of African American history and culture. Juneteenth celebrates African American freedom and achievement, while encouraging continuous self-development and respect for all cultures. As it takes on a more national, symbolic, and even global perspective, the events of 1865 in Texas are not forgotten, for all of the roots tie back to this fertile soil from which a National Day of Pride is growing. We invite you to join us at The Lodge as we celebrate history that unites us all as Americans on Friday, June 17, 2022. It will be an epic affair.
