14 | THE COLONY NEWS | JUNE 2022 | COMMITTEE NEWS As this issue of The Colony News comes out, we are about to begin our warmest months. • Are your window screens becoming brittle and ripping? This might be the time to replace them and keep those summer bugs outside. • This may also be a time to spruce up your outdoor light fixtures with a fresh coat of paint. • Have you thought about replacing your rotted wooden fence with vinyl? • How about applying a new coat of paint to your front door and/or shutters? Have you seen the new color choices in our Colony paint book? At a recent event, I was asked, "Why does the ACC care what we do in our backyards?" That is a very good question. The first thing that came to mind was drainage! It is important that what you do in your back yard does not affect your neighbor's home. This is especially true with zero-lot-line homes. What is a zero-lot-line? This is a piece of residential property in which the structure comes up to, or very near to, the edge of the property line. In our community, those homes are located on Via Amapola, Via Francisco, Corte Lorca, Via Tonada, Via Marisa, Via Graziana, Calle Artino, Calle Llano, Via Xanthe, and Corte Calanova. In such situations, nothing may be attached to your neighbor's wall, e.g., construction of a planter along the wall. If attached to that boundary wall, water may seep into your neighbor's home. What about your stucco? I came upon an article, "The Advantages of Painting Stucco on Your Home." If you have not painted your home in the last seven to 10 years, please consider these reasons. • Seals out moisture • Covers stains • Fills in hairline cracks • Provides curb appeal • Resists UV rays ARCHITECTURAL CONTROL By Gloria Brosky & Diane Schultz ACCESS CONTROL & SAFETY The Access Control and Safety Committee is an advisory committee to the Colony Homeowners Association Board of Directors and the General Manager relating to all issues of community access and safety of residents and visitors. In the event of a major disaster, our committee will work hand-in- hand with the Emergency Preparedness Committee to assist in maintaining the integrity and safety of all Colony residents. Our function is to evaluate access control and general safety of The Colony and the effectiveness of Community Patrol. The Access Control Committee receives monthly reports and statistics from Community Patrol (Nordic Security). These reports include traffic enforcement, emergency responses and incident reports. The monthly report from Community Patrol indicates the following activity and violations that Nordic Security responded to and/or assisted in keeping with the safety and welfare for the Association: Security Statistics: • 26,761 Jackson gate entries • 8 Property/residence checks • 31 Stop sign violations • 2 Speeding violations • 20 Medical, fire and police incidents • 7 Various parking violations • 19 Trash can citations • 44 Garage doors open • 41 Miscellaneous incidents By Bruce Hartwig, 696-5115
