Art Lovers
When she and her husband travel, Betty Ann Kreutziger brings
along a small sketchbook, pencils, a water-filled paintbrush, and
a compact covered box of watercolors. She prefers "plein air"
painting. "Plein air" means in-the-open-air painting or drawing the
landscape, a practice that goes back centuries and was made popular
by the French Impressionists. As Betty Ann says, "Focus on one main
subject in your drawing, you don't need to paint everything." Betty
Ann showed the Art Lovers Club members how she pencils in her
subject first selecting the eyeline or horizon for perspective. In her
watercolor painting, she paints from light colors to dark colors. When
at home, Betty Ann paints in oil using her sketches as reference. We
all enjoyed her demonstration which was informative and lively.
In May, a bus trip to the Mingei International Museum in Balboa
Park was a real treat. Mingei means "Art of the People." This museum
in Balboa Park features over 25,000 objects from 141 countries,
everything from beads, toys, rock sculptures, clothing, textiles
and quilts. Of particular interest is the 1880s "Cigar Silk Dress"
constructed of strips of colorful silk imprinted with brand names
that were used to hold together bands of cigars.
In June, our much delayed and much enjoyed meeting, Members'
Treasures will be held in the Mykonos Room on Tues., June 21 at 1
pm. Our members are invited to share with us some of their most
treasured artworks, photos or keepsakes, be they their own paintings,
grandmothers' brooch or a favorite quilt. We look forward to and
love hearing the stories behind these treasures. Please let Susan Pick
know if you want to share yours (maximum three items, please) at
(760) 305-8907 or erniepick@netzero.net.
