| OHCC LIVING | JUNE 2022 | 35 Wow! Here she is, Pam Bechill! She was our big winner of $200 on April 30! Our Director and Head Caller of the numbers, Greg Coffey, was happy to personally congratulate her. It was very exciting, and, although she didn't win in 50 numbers or less for $1,000, a win is a win, and as you can see, she is a very happy lady. Congrats from all of us on the Bingo Team. We want to take this opportunity to ask for technical assistance. Our large bingo board has a faulty connection and simple wiring is not the issue. If you are an Electrical Engineer, please call Rose DeLong at (760) 216-6923 or Greg Coffey at (404) 664-3313. Thank you in advance for volunteering to use your expertise to help solve the bingo board idiosyncrasies. We are also happy to report that although we missed both January and February this year we will not be left wanting. Our usual eight- month schedule will be "fixed" because we will not have our usual summer break. We will be playing every month now through October in 2022. Please mark your calendars for more fun and winning. And, yes folks, you really do have an opportunity to win $1,000, but only if you join us. Here are the upcoming dates for this year: June 18, July 16, Aug. 20, Sept. 24, Oct. 15. And last, but not least, a big thank you to our fellow bingo player, and lovely friend, Selma Leighton! I hope you caught her compliments last month for our wonderful callers and our President, Rose DeLong. She loves our Bingo games, and she is not only a loyal player, but provides free advertising for us. Many thanks to Selma. See you on June 18. Doors open at 6:30 pm, games start at 7 pm For information contact Trish Jackson at (714) 334-8500 or O56lady@gmail.com. BINGO Yiddish Club Does this photo tantalize your taste buds? If so, please mark your calendars and plan to join us Sun., June 26, 12 noon, in Abravanel Hall, for our fabulous deli luncheon, with more than 15 beautiful voices of the San Diego Jewish Men's Choir to entertain you. Be sure to look for our forthcoming emails and flyers. Here is some food for thought: How many days are there between New Year's Day and July 4th? How many days between Memorial Day, May 30, and Labor Day, Sept. 5? It's unlikely that almost anyone knows the answers to these questions off the top of his or her head without consulting a calendar. But most knowledgeable Jews know that there are precisely 50 days between the second day of Passover and the holiday of Shavuot, which takes place on June 5th- 6th this year. During the first 49 days of this period, known as the "Omer", each day is counted aloud during the evening services. In the Hebrew language "Omer" means sheaves of harvested crop. When the Temple stood, priests would offer their newly harvested barley (an Omer) on the second day of Passover. Their doing so signaled the beginning of Israel's harvest season, a period that lasted seven weeks. Shavuot is referred to as the holiday of harvest, or more precisely, the holiday celebrating the harvest's end. Shavuot is not as widely observed by contemporary Jews as Passover or Yom Kippur, yet it celebrates the most important event in Jewish history: The Giving of the Torah. It is taught that God gave us the "Ten Commandments" on the first night of Shavuot. Today, in reform, conservative, and some orthodox congregations, girls and boys, usually between 13 and 16 years of age, confirm their allegiance to the Jewish way of life on Shavuot. By the way, there are 185 days between New Year's Day and July Fourth, and 68 days between Memorial Day and Labor Day! Now, permit me to end this article with a Yiddish word for this month. The word is: "Nudnik" – rhymes with "could pick," A Nudnik is a pest, a nag, an annoyer, a colossal bore, a nuisance. To merit the status of "Nudnik," this nuisance must be a most persistent, talkative, obnoxious nag! A mother oftens says to a child, "stop bothering me, don't be a Nudnik!" The Nudnik's whole purpose in life is to bother the rest of humanity! ~ Don Kent, Past Vice President
