| OHCC LIVING | JUNE 2022 | 11 It is the month of June, the month of leaves and roses, when pleasant sights salute the eyes, and pleasant scents the noses. June is a month that boasts of many interesting and entertaining events. We begin with World Environmental Day on the 5th of June, Father's Day on June 19 and The Summer Solstice that heralds the official start of summer. Historically throughout Europe, it is the most magical time of the year, characterized by feasting and merrymaking. Large bonfires are built to ward off evil spirits and witches. On Midsummer's Night Eve, people dance barefoot and jump over flames. This brings them prosperity and good luck. William Shakespeare's play "A Midsummer Night Dream," available in our library, creates this merriment and laughter on stage. As you browse among the shelves of our library, you are drawn to the "Veterans" section. Perhaps you served in WWII, Korea or Vietnam. You are curious about one labeled "Stories That Must Be Told" by The Veterans' Writing Group of San Diego County." A closer look inside reveals this short poem: When They're All Gone. A young boy holds his grandfather's hand while the old man wipes a tear. They have stopped before the monument and he is counting back the years. He had been in that terrible war when the world had been torn apart. His grandson will never truly know the sorrow in the old man's heart. For the old man never talked much and his stories were lost to time. So, it goes for most generations when long ago events become benign. How will our history account for itself if no one remains to sing the songs? Who will tell us the stories when the storytellers are gone? You begin to read the introduction of the book. You are suddenly reminded that stories are how we save our heritage and maintain our civilization. Sitting around a fire telling tales was one of the things that distinguished humans from other animals. The author states, "Stories in these books are meant to entertain, but we hope they do much more." Stories That Must Be Told, is a gift from a few veterans from the 7.3 percent of the present US population who served. From them, the reader will learn the intimacies of war, envision each veteran's experiences and bear witness to their challenges. "You will laugh and cry and hope with them. You honor their service by reading what they so generously share." -Kit Bacon Gressitt. The books: Vol. 1 through 4 can be found in our library. Don't miss this opportunity to read these touching stories from the unsung heroes of our country. ~ Sally Benton Library Association JUNE BOOK BUYS Beautiful ..................................................................
