| OHCC LIVING | JUNE 2022 | 33 Village Vets I hope everyone enjoyed our May get-together with speeches by Captain Roy Knight and our Marines from 1st ANGLICO Camp Pendleton. Our barbecue was a great success in getting the Village Vet's reacquainted with each other. We also plan to have an off-site event in July for our members; we are currently working out the details and logistics of the trip. We are expecting to have Amy Forsythe as our guest speaker and guide. Amy has written the book, Heroes Live Here about Camp Pendleton, discussing Marines involvement in combat operations, tributes on post as well as being the Public Information Officer for Camp Pendleton. If you still have not joined us this year, your $10 check per person marked "2022 Dues" can be left at the front desk at the Clubhouse, in the Vet's Club folder. After 12 years and 1,500 senior veterans, Honor Flight San Diego will enter a new chapter as they begin to take Vietnam Veterans on their Honor Flight. They have selected a unique group to be their first Vietnam Veterans to go on THEIR Honor Flight - the Navy HA(L)-3 Seawolves. Seawolves were the most decorated Navy squadron of the Vietnam War and in all of Naval Aviation History! No squadron flew more day or night missions, or combat missions, as they had over 78,000 missions, over 131,000 flight hours, and flew 1,530 medical evacuations. Their bravery, courage, and heroism saved countless lives, and they were awarded medals at the highest levels - Navy Crosses, Silver Stars, Legion of Merit, Bronze Stars, Purple Hearts, and 219 Distinguished Flying Crosses. Their service to our country also took 44 Seawolves lives and wounded more than 200 men. Honor Flight San Diego has room for about 100 Navy Seawolves to go on THEIR "Tour of Honor" this fall from Sept. 30 to Oct. 2. If you know a Navy Seawolf, please have him submit an application at: www.honorflightsandiego.org. After the September Honor Flight, all veterans from the Vietnam War era may apply for flights. The club has been very busy with several local events as of late. A group enthusiastically set out on a whale watching trip from Dana Point. With fresh breezes and salty sea air, they watched the sea birds and dolphins playing, but alas, no whales in sight that day. A group also toured the funky but interesting antique car museum at the Deer Park Winery in Escondido. Featuring mostly convertibles from the 1900s, they have amassed a great many classic automobiles. We were all amazed how large and bulky (but stylish!) those cars were that we grew up with. Some are almost as long as some of our RV's! Revisiting these automotive creations was a delightful trip down memory lane. Our visit was accompanied by a picnic lunch on the patio. The winery is currently being replanted and is not currently producing wine; however, this automobile museum is a real asset, almost in our backyard. Cinco de Mayo was the victory of a small group of Mexican volunteers over the superior French forces of Napoleon lll in the Battle of Puebla. 100 RV Club members celebrated it at the RV Lot with a "Fiesta" coordinated by Tatis Cervantes Aiken and the RV Club Social Committee. The highly regarded Mariachi Real de San Diego performed traditional Mexican music at the event. Our members enjoyed the music and could not resist doing some dancing. The canopies were decorated with colorful banners and Vista Ice Box catered a delicious lunch. Several Mexican blankets were raffled; they were the perfect gift for the kind of cool weather at Ocean Hills the day of the event. At the end, it was a great occasion to celebrate, gather with friends and have a good time! RV Club
