40 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JULY 2022 The African American Cultural Club (AACC) extends a heartfelt 'thank you' to everyone who attended the Juneteenth celebration. We hope you enjoyed the afternoon; the entertaining and educational programs, as well as the games and soul food. We look forward to seeing you next year! Our next event is the AACC 10-Year Celebration party on Saturday, Aug. 13. We are asking attendees to wear all white to help us celebrate this milestone. Please check the Daily Report for ticket sales and additional information. In addition to events that celebrate our culture, the AACC also gives back to the community. In the past, we have partnered with Childhelp, a social welfare organization that provides housing and counseling services for abused and neglected children. Items we have collected and donated to Childhelp include luggage, stuffed animals, backpacks, and school supplies. Childhelp has thanked us repeatedly for our generosity and caring spirit. Recently, AACC members Elaine Brown, Myrtis Suggs, and Shairon Nevills gave back to the community. Elaine volunteered at the 18th Annual Habitat for Humanity Jim Heslop Memorial Golf Tournament. Tournament proceeds fund Habitat programs that benefit qualified low-income families in the Pass Area. Habitat is dependent on the generosity of volunteers to achieve its vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live. The organization greatly appreciates Elaine and her dedication to volunteerism. Thank you Elaine! On May 14, Myrtis Suggs and Shairon Nevills participated in a World Belly Dance Day, a day belly dance teams perform Shimmy Mobs (belly dances) to raise awareness of domestic violence. Myrtis has participated in Shimmy Mobs for more than 10 years and is the leader of the Four Seasons team. Under Myrtis' direction, the team performed a family-friendly belly dance on The Lodge Patio. Thanks to our generous Four Seasons residents, the team's tip jar was filled to the brim as these ladies shimmied. All funds collected will be donated to Roots Down and the Safe Family Justice Center. Elaine Brown also participated as the Shimmy Mob announcer. Thank you Myrtis, Shairon, and Elaine! The African American Cultural Club meets on the first Monday of the month at 6 pm in The Lodge Game Room. All are invited to attend and learn more about African-American culture. Our next meeting will be on Monday, July 11. If you have questions, please contact Wanda Valentine at (951) 544-1606. ~ Jane Gentry African American Cultural Club Four Seasons Veterans Park Aug. 7 is Purple Heart Day. The Purple Heart is the oldest U.S. military decoration; General George Washington awarded the first purple-colored, heart-shaped badges to soldiers who fought in the Continental Army during the American Revolution. Until World War II, the Purple Heart was exclusively an Army decoration and, with rare exceptions, only soldiers received it. The Navy and Marine Corps lacked the authority to award it to sea service personnel. Finally, the Purple Heart is the only decoration awarded without regard to any person's favor or approval; any soldier, sailor, airman or marine who sheds blood in defense of the nation is automatically awarded the Purple Heart. What follows is a history of this unique decoration and some of its soldier recipients. Prisoners of War, Friendly Fire and Terrorist casualties also are presented with Purple Hearts. The flags in August will highlight Operation Overlord-the invasions by Allied Forces at Normandy and then the Battle of the Atlantic. The dedication of the park on Memorial Day was attended by over 230 members of our community. Thanks to our Board and FirstService for their work on making it so successful. If you removed your rock from the park, please return it. They belong with their buddies. ~ Len Tavernetti, ltavernetti@hotmail.com Shimmy Mob Dancers dancers are (L-R) Shairon Nevill, Myrtis Suggs, Elaine Brown, Elizabeth Westbrook, and Yvonne Aguilera AACC members enjoy Shimmy Mob people are (L-R) Denise Owens, Elaine Brown, Jacqueline White, Shairon Nevills, Johnetta Driscoll, Myrtis Suggs, Howard Shelton, and Greta Shelton
