Looking forward to seeing you! ~ Gracy Luna, gracyluna@aol.com, (951) 292-3524 The Hula-Hoopin' Queen Oprah Winfrey reads the book The Hula-Hoopin' Queen by Thelma Lynne Godin. It is a charming story about a young girl named Kameeka Hayes who wishes to be the Hula- Hooping Queen where she lives, on Broadway and 139th Street in New York City. Each day, she competes against her rivals Jamara and Portia, to see who can hoop the longest. One day, Kameeka's mother hosts a birthday party for Miz Adeline, her elderly next-door neighbor. This is when they discover that Miz Adeline was the original Hula-Hooping Queen of the neighborhood. At the party, when everyone finished singing Happy Birthday, Miz Adeline says, "Kameeka, did you say you were hooping? I used to be the best hula-hooper on the block when I was a girl! Come on baby girl, let me show you what I can do with a hoop." Hearing this, Kameeka's mother shakes her head, but Miz Adeline is already pushing back chairs to make room. Then she grabs a hoop from Kameeka and slips it over her head. Miz Adeline's fingers snap, her feet tap, her hips swing, and before they know it, that hoop is swishing around her waist. Next, she swings the hoop around her neck. Everyone smiled as Miz Adeline shimmied the hoop down to her knees, letting it spin around her ankle as she hopped on one foot, then the other. Finally, she proceeds to head out the front door. Ms. Evelyn and Mr. John both grab hoops from Kameeka. They all follow Miz Adeline outside to the street. Kameeka, her friends, her mother, and Miz Adeline's friends spend the rest of their time hula-hooping. They had so much fun! "It was the most exciting birthday party ever!" says Miz Adeline. When it comes to hula-hooping, the young girls discovered that older adults are just as good as them. The reason Oprah Winfrey wanted to read the story online was because it was one of her favorite things to do when she was a girl, and it still is today. Oprah owns several hula-hoops, and she even has an emoji that is an avatar of herself with a hula hoop. The Hula-Hoop Club meets every Friday at 7:30 am in The Lodge Ballroom. No experience is necessary.
