46 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JULY 2022 | "I am proud to be an American. Because an American can eat anything on the face of this earth as long as he has two pieces of bread." ~ Erma Bombeck Happy Fourth of July! Dearly beloved, we are gathered in this moment to celebrate the culinary union of barbecue (a.k.a. barbeque, bar-b-que, bar- b-q, and BBQ) and Independence Day (a.k.a. July 4 or "the Fourth of July"). This moment is a culmination of the Founding Fathers' need for the right to party. Early in our republic, Independence Day was often the biggest community festival of the year. Barbecue, which had developed as a fusion cuisine by the late 1600s, became the ultimate party food during the later period when fourth of July celebrations gained civic and social momentum. The two have been linked up ever since. For me, it's about celebrating with friends and family—and reflecting on what it means to "celebrate" our great nation. When it comes to barbecue and the Fourth of July, what pitmasters and politicians have beautifully joined together, let no one pull asunder! Happy Birthday America! The next Happy Cookers meeting is Fri., July 22, at the South Clubhouse from 11 am to 12 pm. The meetings are on the fourth Friday of every month and held in the South Clubhouse. The July program is all about BBQ and Grillin'. Come and join us on the patio for a BBQ and talking about BBQ with our friends from Albertson's. If you didn't attend, you missed out on an extraordinary time, as The Happy Cookers celebrated Mother's Day with a lovely tea, a table decorating contest, and where many members came decked out in beautiful tea hats. The members were served traditional tea sandwiches and petit fours from Bob the Baker (Bob Golchert). A heartfelt thanks to Bob for donating the petit fours. The members were delighted with scrumptious lemon bars from Chef Chris (Sun Lakes Restaurant). There were door prizes aplenty: lovely Mother's Day tea tins, hat boxes with hats, small hat boxes with a lovely tea cup, See's Candies, and Harney and Son's donated some of their famous English teas. Our guest speaker was Marlene Villalba from Sysco Foods, who spoke about Tazo Teas, and provided us with a variety of Tazo teas to partake of (brought to us courtesy of SLCC Food Services Director, Thomas A). Past President Pat Pinz was presented with a scrapbook as a memento for her term in office. All the tables were beautifully decorated, so it was a very difficult choice. Our guest speaker, Marlene Villalba made her selection; she awarded the best decorated table to Barbara Semic's table with her quirky chicken theme. Each of the ladies at the winning table were awarded a box of See's Candies, with a chocolate tea pot and chocolate teaspoons. Cooking with love provides food for the soul… happy cooking!
