FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | AUGUST 2022 59 On June 28 at 4 pm in 96 degree heat, three teams from the Four Seasons United States Tennis Association (USTA) Mixed Double Team met three visiting teams from Canyon Crest. On court one, Chuck Beckman paired with Scipia Curtis, a resident of Sun Lakes. They played a nearly two-hour match but went down 4-6 4-6 to a very good team that was nearly a combined 50 years younger. On court 2, Lou Stokes and Mike Olson took the visiting team to a tie breaker. The match lasted for more than two-hours but lost the tie breaker 7-10. The temperature had cooled to 91 degrees by the end of the match. On court 4, Larry Martin and Sun Lakes resident Sally Jo Schwartz took on another team, played some strong tennis, and came away with a 6-2 6-3 match win! We gave this much younger team a real challenge. Also, on the USTA mixed Four Seasons team are Alex Castanon, Josie Beauchamp, Tito Calderon, Laura Emerson, Kelly Curtis, and Bernadette Chance. We are always recruiting experienced players to participate on our mens, womens, and mixed USTA teams. If you are interested in joining, please contact any member of the Executive Tennis Committee. ~ Written by Lou Stokes and Mike Olson Website: https://sites.google.com/view/tennis-fourseasons/home. ~ Stan Lam, (714) 757-2141, slamcpa@gmail.com Tennis Club Paddle Tennis (aka Pop Tennis) is where the cool kids hang out in Four Seasons. We hope that everyone enjoyed the Fourth of July – a part of American history. Speaking of history, I had the honor of interviewing our resident, Alan Chan about the history of paddle tennis here at Four Seasons. Alan started playing paddle tennis (aka Pop Tennis) with the Sun Lakes paddle tennis group in early 2010. Because Four Seasons had two paddle courts, he started a group with his ping pong friends in late 2010. They started with seven players. To date, we have over 25 players. Of course, they had to look up the rules for Pop Tennis. They then cut a deal with a paddle company and bought 10 paddles. It was luck of the draw when the paddles arrived. Initially, the paddle and pickle ballers had to share the two courts until later when the pickle ballers moved to their current location. Why we love Paddle Tennis: satisfaction of being active; improved eye-hand coordination; camaraderie; improved balance; fantastic friendships; Dennis calls it the "giggle game;" improved mental alertness – it's a total mind, body and spirit game. We have a group that plays at 6 pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. We also have a group that plays on Saturdays at 8 am. Of course, anyone can play at any time on any day. We have several tennis and pickleball players in our group. Paddles are available to use. One can view on YouTube "how to play paddle tennis" or just let us know of your interest and we will be happy to instruct you. Where can you play besides here? Sun Lakes has a group and there are players in Redlands, and at Venice Beach. Paddle tennis is played in Europe and is very popular in Florida's 55+ communities. We invite you to become part of our fantastic group.
