FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | AUGUST 2022 41 The club has screenings on the second and fourth Sundays of the month. We screen films you won't find at the big cineplexes: documentaries, indie films, foreign films, and other little gems that don't get wide release. This month we're screening two music-related films: Our first screening for the month, on Sunday, Aug. 14 at 6 pm, is the film Summer of Soul (USA 2021, 1 hr. 58 min., English). Here is a brief description from IMDb. com: "Academy Award winning documentary covering the Harlem Music Festival from 1969 with some great performances from some of the most famous jazz, soul, blues, and gospel performers from the 60s. It uses never-before-seen archive footage with interviews of the musicians and attendees giving the documentary a raw and authentic feel, transporting the viewer into a turbulent era marked by the Civil Rights Movement and some of the most legendary and everlasting music ever created." Our second screening for the month, on Sunday, Aug. 28 at 6 pm, is the film Yesterday (USA 2019, 1 hr. 56 min., English). Here is a brief description from IMDb.com: "A struggling musician realizes he's the only person on Earth who can remember The Beatles after waking up in an alternate reality where they never existed." All of our screenings are followed by lively discussion about the film; we'd love to have you join us. The Lodge Theater has very limited seating, so if you're interested in our screenings, come early; we hope to see you there. Please note that all films announced are subject to availability. If you have any questions about the Counter Culture Cinema Club or want to recommend a film, please email Micki Rosen at michelesrosen@gmail.com. ~ Micki Rosen Counter Culture Cinema Club Classic Film Group If you're an Alfred Hitchcock fan, you need to join us in The Lodge Theater on Aug. 23 at 6 pm for one of the best mystery/thrillers of all time: Rear Window. This is the story of a recuperating news photographer who believes he has witnessed a murder. Recuperating from a broken leg, professional photographer L. B. "Jeff " Jefferies is confined to a wheelchair in his apartment in Greenwich Village, Manhattan. His rear window looks out onto a courtyard toward other apartments. During an intense heat wave, he watches his neighbors, who keep their windows open to stay cool. Among them are a lonely woman who Jeff nicknames 'Miss Lonelyhearts;' a newlywed couple; a pianist; a pretty dancer he calls 'Miss Torso;" a middle-aged couple whose small dog likes digging in the flower garden; and Lars Thorwald, a traveling costume-jewelry salesman with a bedridden wife. Jeff is visited regularly by his friend Lisa Fremont and a nurse named Stella. One night, after an argument with Lisa, Jeff is alone in his apartment and hears a woman scream, "Don't!" followed by the sound of breaking glass. Later that night, during a thunderstorm, he observes Thorwald making repeated late-night trips carrying a suitcase. The next morning, Jeff notices that Thorwald's wife is gone, and Thorwald is cleaning a large knife and handsaw. Thorwald then has moving men haul away a large trunk. Jeff becomes convinced that Thorwald has murdered his wife and shares this with Lisa and Stella, who believe him when they observe Thorwald acting suspiciously. Jeff calls his friend Tom Doyle, a New York City Police Detective, and asks him to investigate Thorwald. Doyle finds nothing suspicious — apparently, Mrs. Thorwald is upstate. Soon after, the neighbor's dog is found dead. He believes Thorwald buried something in the flower bed and killed the dog because it was digging there. When Thorwald leaves, Lisa and Stella dig up the flowers but find nothing. Not only does Rear Window have Alfred Hitchcock's trademark wit, suspense, and romance (with a touch of friction) in spades, but it's one of his most well-crafted, cleverly-staged movies; in fact, even though it is based on a Cornell Woolrich story, I can't imagine it being told as effectively in any medium other than cinema. ~ Paul Plamondon, 4seasonsmoviegroup@gmail.com
